A year that started in its normal way suddenly changed as we faced a global pandemic, national lockdown, alert levels and uncertainty. Through it all one thing remained consistent and that was the aroha and sense of community of the School House wha¯ nau. The boys have demonstrated amazing resilience and adaptability through the course of the year. I particularly want to acknowledge our international boarders, who must be commended for the incredible resilience and maturity they have demonstrated, given that they have not been able to go home due to travel restrictions. We have also made a point of having an attitude of gratitude and of recognising how fortunate we are to live in Aotearoa. The year started on the last Sunday in January with us welcoming our new Year 9 boarders and their families. Bright-eyed and bushy- tailed, Ollie Biggs, Dom Botherway, Max Charteris, Tom Hansen, Harry Hanson, Hugo Helmore, Junewon Kang, Matthew Lee, Will McQuilkin, Benji Nation, Louie Nelson, Wills Ockwell and William Studholme were ready to take on the challenges and new adventures secondary school
and boarding have to offer – and what a great job they have done throughout the year. Other young men we welcomed into the School House community during the year were Year 11 students George Helmore, Charlie Stanley and Ethan Pang. Sadly, due to the knock on effect of Covid-19 and alert level changes, a number of our annual events were cancelled, including the Mother’s Day High Tea, the House Dinner and the House Clay Target Shoot. However, we did still manage to successfully hold a number of activities and events throughout the year, which brought the entire House community together. In February, Athletics Day saw the boys competing in a number of championship and non-championship events. Whether they were throwing, jumping or running, each and every School House boy gave his best. We were placed 3rd in the field events cup and 5th overall in the championship event. We had great support from parents and family and it was great for the entire community to gather over a meal at the Housemaster’s garden overlooking the Avon River. Alfie Baker, Jack Bethell and Jack Smith all won prizes for various events. The School House cast and crew – Sam Averill, Max Charteris, Ben Davis, Louis Elworthy, Charlie Hanson, Kit Lamb, Gus Orr, Daniel Qi, Jack Sutherland and Jasper Williams – did an amazing job in the 2020 Reaction House Plays Festival with their performance of Us & Them . Kit Lamb, Sam Averill and Ben Davis must be commended for the roles they played in organising and directing our play. Max Charteris was awarded the runner-up prize for Best Actor, and Ben Davis received a special award
