break through to the play-offs as second seed. This came after College participation in the senior impromptu tournament, with the College A team of Jamie Yee and Angad Vraich losing the semi-final to St Andrew’s College in a tough fought battle of wits. Jamie Yee, however, won second best speaker in the tournament. After a long awaited and rare win against the formidable King’s College in the annual debating exchange, held at College, the team headed into the play-offs confidently. A comfortable win against StAC in the semi-final of the Thursday night competition placed the team in a position to redeem themselves against SMC in the final, held at College. Let’s set the scene: home court (the Old Boys’ Theatre), a two from five record against the opposition thus far in the season, a large crowd, a team that had come second in Canterbury twice now, and a coin flip delivering College the desired negating side. A ferocious battle followed, in which College prevailed to win the title of Canterbury champions in the last ever high school debate for the team. At the conclusion of the competition John-Paul Lay was named fourth best speaker, an amazing achievement.

House debating was again an important event in the College calendar, acting as a gateway and feeder for boys to showcase their talents and join the club. John-Paul Lay and Jamie Yee led Condell’s to victory in the senior grade for the second year in a row, while Angad Vraich led Somes to second place. Julius won the junior competition, with Condell’s taking second. A huge shout-out to all the boys who hadn’t debated before. It takes a lot of courage and zest to stand up in front of an audience and debate. Overall, 2020 has been a sparky, zestful year for College debating. It is fair to say TiC Sian Evans has left her mark on the “sport” in her final year at the school. Debating is a strong suit at College, and this has been one of our most successful years in a while. Congratulations to everyone who participated.
