The Senior 4x100m Relay team of Matt Durant, Benji Ward, Charlie Cameron and Joseph Nash made the final, but the baton was dropped so did not finish. The Senior Mixed 4x400m Relay team of Matt Durant and John Wells, with Lily Cockram and Ella MacDonald of St Margaret’s College, came 3rd with a time of 3:57.83. The Junior Mixed Relay team of Joseph Nash and Armani Lemalu, with Alex Rees-Thomas and Samantha Lasceles of St Margaret’s, was placed a comfortable 3rd – but then, due to a technical ruling, was disqualified. Personally, I feel they were hard done by on this ruling, but as we had no photographic evidence we had to accept the referee’s decision. Congratulations to medal winners Charlie Cameron, Matt Durant, Jasper Moss and John Wells, and to our other finalists: Alfie Baker, Sam Idiens, Armani Lemalu, Joseph Nash and Benji Ward. They continued to train hard, however, and the start to our summer season has begun really well. Let us hope we get to the end of the season in March and see the benefits of their hard work this term. Marcus Hamilton and Charlie Cameron have been appointed our captains of athletics for 2021. I wish to acknowledge the hard work of all the staff, coaches and many parents again this year. Without your commitment and support, we could not have had the successes we did have. On behalf of the athletes, I wish to thank everyone involved – and, of course, repeat my old saying: “We don’t play athletics – we DO athletics.” Graeme Christey MiC Athletics

was mainly due to all the work she did for us prior to the trip. Another key aspect that made this a great trip was the involvement of Year 13 athletes Matt Durant, Sam Kirby, John Wells and Alfie Baker, competing at their last school event. They will be missed in future competitions – and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours. The College team’s results were very good. A top 8 position is a finalist, and though some were not placed in a final there were many personal bests in the results. Also look at the times or distances – they are really fast for windy conditions or a long way if in a field event. Tauranga, 11–13 December 2020 The College team of 11 athletes had a successful weekend at this event. They represented the school well and there was a positive and supportive atmosphere at the meeting. The trip was mainly successful thanks to the positive attitude of the team members, which made it a very easy and enjoyable weekend. Graeme Christey and Matt Thatcher accompanied, managed and coached the team, and coaches Bev Peterson and Tom Turner were also there supporting the boys. They were excellent help, especially Bev with all the sprinters and relays. Special thanks to Briar Wait who, with all the potential disruptions due to the threat of Covid alert level changes, spent many hours organising flights, accommodation and transport. She had to rebook, reshuffle, reschedule over the months leading up to the event. Thanks to her hard work the logistics of the weekend were a success, and the managers had very little to do with regard to administration. Even though Briar did not accompany the team, the success of the weekend
