Boys’ High School, with Matt Lewis taking three wickets in one over and Jack Coles hitting an unbeaten 68. Our second match, against College 3rd XI White, took place on a day when everything went right for us. We built a good score following 90 by Matt Lewis, and then our bowlers gave them no space and were able to keep taking wickets to give us our second win. The following three matches were all wins: against Darfield High School, Matt Lewis scored 55, Will Bretherton 60, and Hamish Falls-Anderson took 5/33; against Rangiora High School, Hamish took 5/27 to give us a win by four runs; and against Selwyn District Lions, Hamish took his third five wicket bag with 5/11 and Jack Coles took five wicketkeeping dismissals with four catches and a stumping, before we cruised to a 10 wicket win. The final match against Riccarton High School 1st XI was a precursor to the final the following week. Riccarton won this match by one wicket to take home advantage. In the final, Hamish Falls-Anderson again bowled well to take 4/25 and we dismissed Riccarton for 134 in 34 overs. In reply, we were in serious difficulty at 68/8. Jack Coles and Alex Scott then formed a formidable partnership that changed the match completely. They made a 56 run partnership for the ninth wicket over the course of 12 demanding overs, to close the gap to 11 runs to win. With our final wicket, Jack sent the ball over the midwicket boundary to win the match, which gave us the title. This was the third game against Riccarton that was decided by a single wicket. however – brilliant one week, dismal the next. A smashing 331 in 60 overs the peak, but all out for 37 our nadir. The most exciting effort was chasing down 232 at Straven Road, with Charlie Eglinton and George Ryan scoring great 50s. Our bowling was led by medium pacer Flynn Topham, who started the year with 6/8 including a hat- trick. Flynn finished with 29 wickets at a stunning average of 7.8 before he was promoted into the 2nd XI. Our main spinner, Josh Beaglehole, took 32 at 11.8. He could possibly have taken 50 wickets or more but for Flynn always bowling ahead of him. They were ably supported by our new ball specialists Rob McClean and Tom Harrison, our left arm spinner Charlie Eglinton and the rest of the attack, all of whom had their moments. Special mention to Ed Cochran for coming on to bowl against a rampant Christchurch Boys’ High School side and taking 5/19 – our only other five bag for the year. We played just four rounds in the two day competition, only losing outright to College Black – after winning the first innings – and in the first innings against Darfield, before holding out for a draw. Our other two matches were dominant wins, gaining us enough bonus points to take 2nd place by just 0.85 of a point. In the one day competition we lurched from loss to win to loss again, but somehow managed to earn a play-off for 3rd place. Rangiora High School’s 257 proved just too challenging in the end, but we gave it a go. I would like to thank Graham Duston for all his help in managing the team, Sean for doing the scoring on so many occasions, all the parents who were so supportive through the season – and, of course, the lads, for being a really fantastic and fun group to work with.

3RD XI WHITE CRICKET Managers: Ryan Thomas Coaches: GrahamDuston, Ryan Thomas Team: Hugh Duston (captain), Ed Cochran (vice-captain), Levi Astle, Josh Beaglehole, Charlie Eglinton, Jed Gimblett, Tom Harrison, Ollie Jones, Robert McClean, Joe Pfahlert, George Ryan, Flynn Topham The growing depth of talent in cricket allowed two 3rd XIs to be entered in 2020 competitions. The 3rd XI White team was composed wholly of Year 11 players. While there were some mixed results through the year, viewed in the context of being possibly the youngest team in the grade, they performed well. Each week they took on the challenge to stand up to older, more experienced sides. They showed they could compete on most days, winning when they played to their potential. We earned 2nd place behind College 3rd XI Black in the two day competition, and came 4th in the one day competition, narrowly losing to the Rangiora High School 1st XI in a high scoring play-off for third. The team was well led by Hugh Duston, with Ed Cochran stepping in when Hugh was injured later in the year. The team quickly developed a good supportive culture and their attitude and effort at training and during matches was fantastic. The batting was built around George Ryan’s flair – including 150 against St Bede’s College 3rd XI – Ed Cochran’s consistency through both campaigns, Levi Astle’s stickability, and the rest of the squad’s ability to contribute anywhere in the order.
