The Prescription for Success at Yurek Pharmacy
For more than six decades, Yurek Pharmacy & Home Healthcare has been a trusted part of the community, helping generations of families with everything from prescriptions to healthcare advice. Even after a challenging year following the fire next door to their Talbot Street location, the business has once again been voted Favourite Pharmacy in the Readers’ Choice poll, an honour Peter Yurek says means a great deal to both staff and owners alike. “Our patients are the best,” Peter said. “It has been incredibly difficult to operate the business after the fire.” Smoke damage destroyed critical technology systems and phone lines, forcing the pharmacy to operate on recovery servers while continuing to serve customers under difficult circumstances. Despite those setbacks, Peter says the staff’s dedication and the community’s understanding helped carry them through. “We are the first to acknowledge that our service levels were not where they should be,” he explained. “The staff have been great in working through all these difficulties, doing their best to look after our patients despite the circumstances. Our patients have been very understanding and appreciative of our efforts. I feel honoured to have such a great team looking after our patients and honoured to be part of such a loyal and understanding community.” Peter believes the business has remained successful because it continues to follow the values established by his father, Ed Yurek, who founded the pharmacy 63 years ago. “Dad taught us to connect with our patients and offer good service at a
reasonable price,” he said. “Our slogan, ‘Helping you feel better™,’ sums up our approach over the years.” That commitment extends beyond prescriptions. Yureks members provide guidance on wound care, incontinence products and other healthcare concerns while also giving back through charitable events and community initiatives. Continuity of personnel has also played a major role in building trust. “We have a number of staff who have been with us over 20 years, a few over 30 years,” Peter said. “Yurek’s has remained consistent. The values are the same and the patient experience is similar, delivered by knowledgeable staff who enjoy what they are doing.” Although the pharmacy is currently functioning within a smaller temporary footprint, major renovations are underway. Peter hopes the entire main floor will reopen by August 31st, featuring a redesigned pharmacy focused on patient care, including private consultation spaces and expanded pharmacist services. “I love the patient care and business planning challenges,” Peter said. “Helping our patients motivates me. It gives me real purpose.”
