Impact Award: Business of the Year by Peri Hayes Heather Harris, co-owner of Evelyn’s Sausage Kitchen, introduces: “We officially took over Evelyn’s Sausage Kitchen in January of 2023, when the founder made the decision to retire after more than 30 years in business. It was a rare and meaningful opportunity to carry on a well-loved, local legacy.” This dedicated team honed in on their passion for preserving a local gem, while building to be a family-driven business. “Our service is centred around offering high-quality, handcrafted food while creating a true, local market experience,” Heather proudly describes. Signature products entail the following: an array of cheeses, beef jerky, fresh sausages, pepperoni sticks and Polish coil, along with their curated selection of locally- made products. Today, customers are invited to explore their retail space for nourishing ingredients, flavourful snacks and gifts assembled with care. “It’s about convenience, quality, and supporting local -- all in one place.” “My husband and our three boys are all involved in different aspects of the business,” Heather delightedly details, “Each bringing their own strengths to the table. We’re also lucky to have extended family as part of the team: my niece, Mikayla, supports our retail space, and our daughter-in-law, Amelia, manages our social media and our Horton Market presence.” Beyond family, they have established their appreciated team of six part-time staff members. Excitingly, Evelyn’s Sausage Kitchen celebrated the grand opening of their retail space on May 1st. Heather shares their present focus on completing the new production facility, allowing increase in production capacity as they grow their relationships with
wholesale partners. Moreover, they are exploring innovative ideas for supporting underserved areas within the agri-food space. Regarding their recent Impact Award, Heather graciously expresses, “Receiving the ‘ of the Year’ feels like a reflection of so much more than our business. It represents the people behind it: our team, our family, our partners and the community that has supported us every step of the way. As we continue to grow through our new market space and expanded production, we carry that responsibility to keep building something that not only serves our customers, but lifts up others around us. A big part of our focus is on creating more opportunities for collaboration; whether that’s with local producers, small businesses, or through community-driven experiences that bring people together around quality food.” Evelyn’s Sausage Kitchen is located at the main intersection in Shedden -- in the bright red building. They operate seven days a week: Monday to Saturday from 9:00 am – 6:00 pm, and Sunday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. As Heather concludes with cheer, “Everything we do at Evelyn’s Sausage Kitchen is rooted in community. We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received.”
