bolizes the dally forgiveness of sins com mitted after baptism. Ye are clean. Peter’s mistakes bring out the impor tant lesson that there need be no repe tition in the matter of confessing past sins. He who is once forgiven needs only to confess and be cleansed from the daily transgressions. (1 Jno. 1:7- 9).—Evans. But not all. Clean here evidently means from the connection, regenerate. There was one of the com pany who was never regenerated ¿and that was Judas. Jesus was never de ceived about Judas, yet He suffered him to continue a member of that company. We should be very patient in dealing with those in our churches the genuine ness of whose regeneration we question, —Torrey. v. 13. Ye call me Master. We should speak of Christ in terms of re spect, always remembering His deity. Many call Him simply “Jesus,” His human name. He was never so adj dressed by His disciples, only by demons (Mt. 8:29; Mk. 1:24; 5 :6; Lk. 8:28) and those who knew Him as a prophet. (Mk. 10:17; Lk. 18:38; see 1 Pet. 3:15— literally “sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts” ).—Comp. Bible. v. 14. Ye ought to wash one an other’s feet. The custom of feet wash ing in literal fulfillment of this typical command is not older than the fourth century.—Camb. Bible. Feet washing is put for the whole circle of offices of self denying love.—Comp. Bible. We must do for each other in our pool» measure what He has done for us, tak ing on us the form and work of a slave that we may remove from each other any stain that may have been con tracted.—Meyer. A sign but not a sacrament.—Sel. As He lovingly deals with us, so we are to deal with one another. He that would cleanse an other’s feet must be at his feet to cleanse them.—Gaebelein.
v. 16. The servant is not greater, Christ gave the perfect example of dig nified humility.—1LSel. This saying oc curs four times in the Gospels, each time in a different connection. (Mt. 10:24; Lk. 6:40; Mt. 15:20).—Plum mer. Jesus Washing the Disciples’ Feet, John 13:2-15. Memory Verse: “I have given you an example.” John 13:15. In the country where Jesus lived the people always washed their feet before they ate, and when they had company come to the .house, they would have a servant with water and towel to wash the feet of the company before they came into dinner. Let us bow our heads and ask Jesus to bless us this morning as we listen to this wonderful story telling what Jesus did for his disciples. Lesson Story: “One day Jesus and the disciples were to have supper to gether in a room where Jesus had told the disciples to prepare and get ready for the supper. In the afternoon Jesus and the disciples started from the little town of Bethany and walked down the mountain side to Jerusalem, which was the city where they were going to have supper together. The roads were dusty and the streets of the city were dirty and so when they got to the room where they were to eat, the first thing was to have their feet washed. Now who was going to wash the feet, for there were the twelve disciples and Jesus. Now of
