burdens but we are to get beneath the burdens of others. Christ is the great burden bearer. The more like Him we are, the more burdens we shall under take. There is an old fable that when God made the birds., He made their wings subsequently and separately. When the birds were commanded to take them up, they refused, believing that the burden would be too great. The burdens that Christ gives are as the wings of a bird, the means by which the Christian rises toward heaven. There are no mistakes in God’s book keeping. We reap as we sow. Eternity is no place for correction and amend ment. The cross stands between us and a judged world. MONDAY, Nov. 3. Matt. 16:13-24. Peter’s Great Confession. Peter first confessed the Deity of Christ and Paul first proclaimed it, Acts 9:20. Four answers are given to the question of the Saviour. They are true as far as they go, but they do not go to the heart of the matter. Jesus is far more than law-giver, teacher, moral ist, patriot, or exemplar, although flesh and blood nature so regards Him. Over against unenlightened human reason is the revelation of the Father. This truth is not only foreign but distasteful. “Be it far from thee” exclaims Peter, on the new teaching of Christ’s death. Even friendly, moral, upright men like Peter may be the unconscious mouth-piece of Satan in denying the need of Christ’s atonement. TUESDAY, Nov. 4. Mark 8 :31-38. Denying Self. The denial of self is not to be iden tified With self-denial. The latter may

SATURDAY, Nov. 1. Gal. 5:16-25. Fruits of Flesh and Spirit. The Galatian Epistle treats of law and grace, works and faith, Moses and Christ. It sets forth the liberty of son- ship and shows . that nothing can be added to the work of ' Christ. The works of the flesh can be no higher than the flesh. The fruit of the Spirit is the result of what we are in Christ. Love is the balance wheel of the Gospel and is higher than law. Since there is lib erty alone in Christ we must stand fast in it and maintain it. The law appeals to the flesh. The Christian is in the Spirit. The law exposes man’s weak ness. The Gospel reveals Divine mercy. The law is for the unrighteous. The Christian has the righteousness of God. 2 Cor. 5:21. The law curses and kills. In Christ we have life, and peace. Rom. 8:6. SUNDAY, Nov. 2. Galatians 6:1-7. Burden Bearing. We are not only to shoulder our own (Concluded from preceding page) the washing of the feet for them, even though it was not a very pleasant work. Sometimes we have work to do that we do not like, but if it is right, we should follow the example Jesus has taught us and do it. We notice that Jesus did it willingly and never a word of complaint, even though it should have been done by some one else. Sometimes we have to do other people’s work,, so let us re member and do whatever work we do willingly. Closing Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus we thank thee'for showing us how to be helpful to each other, and help us to re member this lesson story.
