which evoked the spirit of the Globe Theatre combined with a more modern avant-garde ambience. The Company also paid tribute to the original Elizabethan theatre tradition of having male actors perform in female roles, with a little twist by also turning over a few of the male roles to the troupe’s female actors. Director Amanda Kellock noted that one of the play’s themes is the power of Love to transcend human boundaries, including the petty squabblings behind the deadly feud between the Montagues and the Capulets. “I believe that everyone has the right to love and be loved in return,” stated Kellock. “And if you are lucky enough to find such a love—to find the person who cracks you wide open and makes you a better version of you—then I believe that love should be honoured, respected, celebrated.”
Love was in the air, along with heart- break and tragedy, during a warm sum- mer’s evening at the Place des Pionniers in Hawkesbury, as the Repercussion Theatre Company presented Romeo and Juliet: Love Is Love. The Montréal-based theatre company celebrates its 30 th or “pearl” anniversary this year, and what better offering than one of the most precious gems from Shakespeare’s jewel box of plays! This year also marks the first time that Hawkesbury is on the theatre company’s summer schedule.
