IS A NEW TILE FLOOR? ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS
Ever since my daughter, Megan, was a little tyke, she saw me take on numerous handyman projects around the house. She’s watched as I added an entire room to the house — concrete, electrical, and all — installed a complete gabled roof, built arches into doorways with stucco to transform a space into a Spanish-style hideaway, and outfitted the entire yard with automated sprinklers and drip systems. Megan has seen me work with brick, concrete, wood, and even metal as I welded together a wrought-iron fence. And then, finally, she’s seen me do tile work, decorating the kitchen floor of the second family home with diagonal cut tiles and custom border inlays. Last year, Megan was fortunate enough to buy her first home. It’s a bit of a fixer-upper, but a great place nonetheless. Apparently, all that handiwork she’d seen me do had instilled in her a desire to do the same. “Dad,” she said to me, “I want you to teach me how to lay tile.” Of course I agreed, and we got to work. Last Thanksgiving weekend, I went over and, with a little bit of help, Megan and I tore up the old, sticky linoleum, some partially laid wood floors, and
partial carpet. After we’d finished and cleaned it up, the place was looking pretty good, if unfinished. Luckily, the floors were level, and we were ready to get started. Megan went out to a place in Corona and picked up the tiles, planks with the feel and texture of quality wood. We began laying some of them out and decided to go with a 12-inch offset with a return to the baseline every fourth tile. So Friday after Thanksgiving, we laid out an intricate pattern across her floors, mixing our thinset and slapping it on carefully, making sure each tile was level. After dozens of hours working over the weekend and the following week, we got it ready to be grouted on Sunday. Throughout the process, Megan got steadily more skilled and confident in her abilities. It was cool to watch her and her boyfriend, Sean, laying the thinset, scraping it, and placing the tile level. She even learned how to use two different types of tile saws, cutting everything up to spec. Then, when it came time to grout, it was just Megan and I, on our hands and knees, exhausting ourselves to ensure everything was done right. By Christmas, the whole thing was done, and it looked great, if I do say so myself. I may be blessed to have the opportunity to sit and use my mind for my career, but when I’m not at work, I seek out the physical aspect of life — racing mountain bikes, working with my hands, and, of course, laying tile. In my opinion, modern life gets a little too easy sometimes. It’s important to get your hands dirty every once in a while to remind you of everything you take for granted. This time, I was just glad to have Megan working right alongside me.

The app is free and available for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and Windows 8. Once your photos are uploaded and saved, you can then browse PhotoAffections.com, where you can order a variety of custom products, including magnets, canvas prints, and phone cases. Social Print Studio Functioning as both a website and a stand-alone app, Social Print Studio is a small company based in San Francisco that has been printing social
media photos since 2010. While this company is capable of printing photos of your social media posts, they can do so much more with your digital memories.

The Munga Is on My Radar THE TOUGHEST RACE ON EARTH
There are those who find my passion for mountain bike races difficult to understand. Pushing the mind and body to the limit every few months isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time, but I love it. It’s a chance to see what I’m made of, to keep fighting despite overwhelming odds. That’s why The Munga has caught my eye. Famed endurance athlete, Alex Harris, founded The Munga mountain bike race in 2015. Harris has a simple philosophy: Only through adversity do we come to terms with who we really are. The Munga, a 1000-km, single-stage race across the heart of South Africa in the middle of summer, embodies this idea. Since its inaugural race, the event has quickly become one of the most infamous in the MTB community. Dubbed “the toughest race on earth,” The Munga traverses some of the most difficult terrain south of the equator. Unlike other classes of race, riders don’t receive outside support and can’t mail themselves packages of supplies. Race officials provide water, food, and mechanical assistance along the route, but everything else has to be carried on your bike from start to finish. It’s designed to push riders to their absolute limit.
At last year’s race, Marco Martins finished first, in a record- breaking 58 hours. For reference, riders are given five days
to complete The Munga. Watching his impressive performance put this
race on my radar. I’m always looking for a new challenge and a chance to travel to new and beautiful locations. Perhaps this year I’ll book my tickets to South Africa and give The Munga a go myself. I don’t promise I’ll break Martin’s record, but that’s the thing about mountain bike racing — you never know what you’re capable of until you try.

from the turkey carcass, shred, and set aside. Put carcass in a large stockpot, along with 3 scallions, ginger, mushrooms, and water. Escape to Nicaragua
After the hectic holiday season, many of us feel like we need another vacation just to unwind. Luckily, January and February are two of the best months to travel. Flight prices plummet and crowds thin out after the Christmas rush. If you’re looking to escape the dreary winter weather, there’s no better place to visit this season than Nicaragua, the “Central American country that has it all,” as Condé Nast Traveler puts it. Whether you’re looking to explore the rainforests surrounding the Río San Juan or get lost in the quirky-yet-beautiful architecture of Granada, there’s something for everyone in this tropical wonderland. One must-see destination is the Cerro Negro volcano. Just a baby at 150 years old, it’s one of the most active volcanoes in the region. It only takes about an hour to scale its smoking, black gravel surface, and the verdant forests surrounding the peak are a sight to behold. Adventurous travelers can board down the side, reaching ludicrous speeds as they teeter and try not to fall. If relaxing on a pearlescent beach is more your speed, take a short boat trip out to the Corn Islands. There, you can amble around the small towns bordering the shockingly blue Pacific, visit a number of laid-back seafood restaurants, get scuba certified for a fraction of the price anywhere else in the world, or just read your book as you swing in a hammock by the waves. You can also visit the gorgeous, alabaster Our Lady of Grace Cathedral in “new” Léon. The biggest church in all of Central America, this unique Baroque and neoclassicist structure was built in 1814. Visitors can climb onto its roof (as long as they don’t wear shoes) and bask in the view of surrounding volcanoes (including Cerro Negro). If you’re planning on heading to Nicaragua, it’s best to do it soon. Neighbor Costa Rica often overflows with tourists, and instead of wading through the crowds there, many travelers are catching on to what Nicaragua has to offer.
