Jake Abbiss – Year 10 School House Creativity, Social Intelligence School House boarder Jake, 14, is handy with pencils, a sketchbook, a camera and a guitar. From scenic Queenstown, where there is plenty to inspire his creativity, Jake is enjoying DVC and Art this year and is set on Physics, DVC, Art and French next year, with a view to studying architecture in the future. Jake enjoys drama, but missed High School Musical through illness, and the REACTION House Plays Festival because he was on Immerse & Inspire at Boyle River. A broken arm cut short his rowing training last season, but he took up the oars again earlier this year, his “School House and Friends” eight coming 5th in the South Island. He also plays hockey and has gone up a grade this season. “I love it, it keeps my fitness up and it’s fun, but I’m looking forward to rowing again.” As Head of Wellbeing, Matias brings experience to the journey, having challenged himself on all fronts during his College years. At last, all the threads are starting to align and he sees how the balance of academic work, sport and wellbeing can combine for an enjoyable life. Year 9 was tough with all the homework and “a massive workload in Science – most of which I didn’t understand.” Five years on, Chemistry is one of his preferred subjects. “Once you connect things together, it starts to make sense. But it can take quite a while to get there.” Coming to College was the best thing that has happened to him, plus the realisation that time and devotion can produce some amazing results. Captain of the 2nd XI hockey team, Matias is also an athlete and loves running on the Port Hills and enjoying the sunrise. Fletcher Anderson – Year 12 Condell's House Leadership, Teamwork Teamwork, getting on with people, knowing how to work with others – these are fundamental skills being consolidated this year by Fletcher. “Everything you do, you have to work with other people.” With wide sporting, academic and cultural interests, he knows exactly how it works! A loose forward in the 1st XV, Fletcher made the Crusaders Junior Knights team in July and would love a professional career with the franchise. He was also in the rowing eight and really enjoyed the process and total commitment required in the build up to competition. Fletcher was in Lord of the Flies , one of two senior drama productions, and plays lead guitar for Yellow Covers, which entered Smokefree Rockquest 2019. He is an advocate of the House system, and proud of Condell’s “huge House spirit.” Academically, he is into English, Physics and Drama, and is a member of the Arts & Culture committee.
