Basketball The College basketball club had a busy season, with an increase in both Friday night and Saturday teams. The Senior A team played in the Thompson Trophy competition, which is highly competitive. The team defeated St Thomas of Canterbury College in the quarter-final and played Cashmere High School in the semi-final. In a very close match, the team lost by 3 points 76–73, and therefore missed a spot in this year’s final. College had five teams involved in Saturday basketball run through the Canterbury Basketball Association. The Senior A team played in the U23 competition and the Senior B team were in the U20 grade. The Senior B team finished third in the grade, with the final match a win against St Andrew’s College. There were two teams in the U17 grade. The U17B lost a double overtime semi-final to Middleton Grange 88–83, and the U15 side, playing in the top division, competed well when the full roster was available. In Friday night basketball, College had three teams contesting finals. The Year 10 Black side led for the majority of the game, but forfeited the lead late in the match to eventually lose 64–61 to Oxford Area School. The Year 11 White side were unable to complete an unbeaten season when StAC managed to reverse their earlier loss to College and win the final 69–49, and the Senior White side defeated a good Shirley Boys’ High School team by 50–36 to claim their grade. A number of College basketball players represented Waitaha and Canterbury at U15–U19 level. Special mention to Josh Book (U17) and Nic Book (U15), who have been selected to attend national age group camps.

Tournament Week, with three teams involved in competitions. In Dunedin, the Junior team started with three good wins in pool play, before a 96–57 quarter-final win against John McGlashan College. This meant a semi-final against cross town rivals Christchurch Boys’ High School. The team were up 31–10 after the first quarter and never relinquished their lead, easily booking a place in the South Island final against King’s High School. A much tighter match saw College lead for the majority of the game, eventually securing a 71–54 win and the South Island title.

The Senior B team were involved in the Southern Cup in Christchurch. At the end of three days play the team finished 5th with only one loss. Wins over Shirley Boys’ High School B and Kaiapoi High School saw the team top their pool, before a loss in the quarter-final to Rolleston College took them out of contention. Playing in the semi-finals for 5th–8th place, College defeated Hagley College 62–54, before beating SBHS for the second time to claim 5th place.
