pool matches, with wins over Waitaki Boys’ High School, Lincoln High School and Papanui High School, and losses to Middleton Grange and St Andrew’s College, who both went on to make the tournament final. Finishing third in their pool meant they missed a quarter-final spot, but they rallied to win their last three matches against St Thomas of Canterbury College, CBHS and Rangiora High School to claim 9th place. In the game against St Thomas, the team won 112–109 in overtime, with Josh Book scoring 56 points. Clay Target Shooting In the July school holiday a group of College students travelled to Invercargill to compete in the South Island schools’ clay target shooting championships for the first time. Over two days of competition the team were involved in a number of different events, with some pleasing results. In the single rise event, Nicholas Wilks and George Cochrane achieved personal bests, while George Nehoff shot 19 out of 20. In the points score event, Henry Lassen scored 57/60 and George Nehoff 59/60, a result which saw him into a shoot off with six other shooters. In a tense shoot off, George prevailed to claim 2nd place in the South Island. After all the events, George had scored 88 out of a possible 90 and was only one point behind the high overall score for the competition. Congratulations to George on his achievement, and to the rest of the College team. Cycling The South Island schools’ road cycling championships were held at Ruapuna raceway in July. A team of College cyclists were involved in individual and team time trials, and road race events. In the individual time trial, Michael Audeau was 3rd in the U17 grade,

was a great achievement as, having been involved in a crash early on in the race, he and Fearghus set about chasing the leaders to join them on the final lap. Michael won the final sprint by a bike length, with Fearghus finishing amongst the leading bunch of riders. Fencing College fencers Oscar Aynsley and Tim Wang both won their events at the Mid South secondary school fencing championships in Christchurch. Oscar took first prize in the mixed epee individual competition, while Tim proved his prowess with the foil by winning the mixed foil individual event, plus a combined College–Rangi Ruru team came second in the mixed foil team event. The New Zealand secondary schools’ fencing competition took place in Auckland. Tim, Oscar and Eden Pidgeon all performed to a high standard, with Tim being knocked out in the “table of 16”, Oscar being eliminated in the

and less than half a second behind the winner. Thomas Audeau was 10th in the U15 grade, Michael Taylor 11th in the U16 grade, and Jack Drage 15th in the U20 grade. In the U20 team time trial the College A team finished 4th in the 15km event, with the B team coming 7th. The road race event was held over a variety of distances. Thomas was 12th in the U15 grade, while Fearghus Bratten, finishing 6th in the U17 grade, was only 20 seconds behind the winner. Jack placed 8th in the U20 grade, only two seconds behind the winner in a very tight 38km road race. Congratulations to the team and to Michael on his 3rd place. College cycling travelled to Blenheim for the annual two day tour, which consists of four events over two days. At the end of racing Jack achieved a creditable 6th in the U20 road race and 7th in the hill climb. Michael claimed College’s only podium finish. After coming 4th in the U17 time trial and 6th in the hill climb, he finished 1st in the road race. This
