Harriers The annual Canterbury secondary schools’ road race was held at the A&P showgrounds. It was a quick turnaround for the College runners who had competed in the school cross country earlier in the week. In the Year 9 3km race James Lange ran to a top 10 place, finishing 8th, and school junior champion Sam Idiens came 2nd in the U16 race, only a few seconds behind the winner. College had a number of senior runners competing, with Kyle Houston placing 10th and the team finishing 4th in the grade. A small group of College runners travelled to New Brighton to compete in the Canterbury secondary schools’ cross country championships. The 1km loop on the old Ascot Golf Course was in good condition, as was the weather. In the Year 9 3km race, James ran a great race to finish 8th, while Nate Ovendale was close behind, finishing 12th. In the U16 race, Sam again came 2nd, in a repeat of the earlier road race, with Harry Greenwood and Angus Thorne finishing in the top 20. In the senior 4km race Kyle and Matias Biraben-Clough achieved top 20 finishes, with the senior team finishing 4th overall. The annual national school cross country championships were held in Timaru. There were over 700 competitors at this event and good conditions meant for some excellent racing. In the Year 9 Boys 3km race James ran well to finish 22nd in the country. Sam, competing in the Junior Boys 4km race, ran a brilliant race to claim the national title. He also ran as a member of the Canterbury Junior Boys A team that came 3rd in the teams’ relay event on the Sunday. Congratulations, Sam, on this wonderful result.
“table of 8”, finishing 7th, and Eden being eliminated in the “table of 4”, placing 3rd. After the individual competition it was straight into the teams events. Oscar was in the Mid South A team that won a silver medal in the epee competition, and Tim and Eden (as captain), along with two others, were in the Mid South Composite 1 team that took the national title, claiming gold in the foil competition. finished 4th in the local premier competition, which qualified them for the national premier tournament in Napier, involving the top 32 teams from across the country. In pool play the team lost to Mount Albert Grammar School and Scots College, and faced an agonising 1–0 loss to New Plymouth Boys’ High School. The team claimed their first win halfway through the week when they defeated Otago Boys’ High School 3–1, avenging their loss to OBHS earlier in the year Football The 1st XI football team
during the annual exchange. This match was followed by a very good 3–2 win over St Patrick’s College, Silverstream, from Wellington. The team finished 26th overall and, with a large number of the squad returning next year, gained valuable experience from the tournament. The football club enjoyed another successful season. The Junior XI again performed well and made it to the competition semi-finals, before losing to St Bede’s College who they had defeated previously. They then lost a penalty shootout to Shirley Boys’ High School in the decider for the 3rd–4th play-off. Saturday teams all competed well in their divisions, with some teams earning promotions early on and holding their own in Division 1 competitions. The 2nd XI played in the 19th grade against school and university teams, which took a bit to get used to. They improved over the season to win the plate final 4–1 over FC Twenty 11. Both the 14A and 15A sides competed in Division 1 of their respective grades and both finished a creditable 2nd after the regular season.
