finals. The 2nd XV improved over the season to win a tight semi- final over Hillmorton High School 1st XV, before losing to a strong Christchurch Boys’ High School team in a muddy final. The U15A side claimed College’s first section one U15 win, after defeating the high flying St Thomas of Canterbury College team in the semi-finals. The U58kg team made the semi- finals, while the 14A side had a rare victory against CBHS 14A during the season. A number of College players have gone on to represent Canterbury Metro and Canterbury Country teams at U16 and U18 level. Special mention must go to Zach Gallagher, who has been selected for the New Zealand Schools team and will play test matches against Fiji and Australia in October. Christ’s College played host to the U16 Quad rugby tournament and the U15 South Island Invitational rugby tournament during Winter Tournament Week. The U16 Quad saw College play matches against John McGlashan College, Nelson and StAC. After three days of tough, competitive matches College had a 21–10 win over StAC and two 5 point losses to Nelson and JMC. The U15 team had three pool matches against Marlborough Boys’ College, Waitaki Boys’ High School and Southland Boys’ High School. Two initial wins saw College and Southland square off to determine top of the pool and a place in the final. In wet conditions, College prevailed 15–12 and went on to play Timaru Boys’ High School in the tournament final. The weather continued to be wet and cold, but College got the better of them to win 17–12 and claim the South Island title for the first time in 20 years. Skiing College skiers travelled to Mt Hutt for the annual Canterbury secondary school ski championships and, in good race conditions, the

team performed well. After two runs down the course, College had four boys in the top 10. Sam Hadley defended the title he won last year, with Ned Botherway coming 5th, Luc Botherway 7th and William Picton-Warlow 8th. These individual placings meant the College team placed first in the team event. Having secured the top team and individual trophies at the Canterbury championships, College then travelled to Wanaka for the South Island secondary school championships at Cardrona. It was another successful event. The College team of Sam, Ned, Luc and Tom Picton-Warlow claimed 1st place, while the other College team of William, Sam Willems, Charles Lord and Thomas Johnston finished 2nd. Individually, College claimed the top two places, with Sam 1st and Tom a close 2nd. Earlier in the term Sam attended the New Zealand Alpine National Senior Championships and, in a tough few days competing against a number of top international skiers, finished 3rd in the senior men’s giant slalom, in the process claiming the New Zealand U21

and U18 titles. At the Australian National Alpine Championships in September, Sam won bronze in the open men’s competition. Congratulations, Sam, on these great results. Swimming James Currie participated in the national secondary schools swimming championships, which was an important meet in the lead-up to him competing in the Australian State Teams Championship in October as part of the New Zealand team. James had an outstanding meet and, competing in the 15 years age group, achieved gold and national titles in the 200m and 100m breaststroke, silver in the 50m breaststroke and 200m backstroke, and bronze in the 100m backstroke. He also came 4th in the 100m individual medley and 5th in the 50m backstroke. An outstanding set of results from this national championship event.
