DEVELOPMENT My year at College

In August 1981, a young Englishman – and English teacher – from Eastbourne College, East Sussex, arrived at College for a teaching exchange. It was the start of a deep and abiding connection between Nigel Wheeler and Christchurch. Here, Nigel shares his College story.

I arrived in August 1981 and, before term started in September, had met poet Sam Hunt at a fellow teacher’s house, endured watching an extraordinary All Blacks vs Springboks match in the company of fiercely partisan Old Boys, and met the Gallaway

Brown, later to win a test cap, was the first player ever to face my loopy leg spin wearing a helmet. Backyard cricket and making omelettes with the boys stand out as memories of my time in Jacobs. I moved to Corfe House for my last term and, with no fixed

family, who were dropping off Garth for his final term.

I was a tutor in Jacobs House for the first two terms, living in fairly spartan accommodation, sharing a bathroom and kitchen with the boys. My fellow tutor Vaughan
