JANUARY 3Í, Í943 JESUS THE BREAD OF U F E J o h n 6
Philip, seeing only the five small loaves and two small fishes, thought, “We cannot meet the need at all” (cf. V. 7)-, but he needed to see’ the un limited resources in Jesus Chfist. It was Andrew who found the lad with the loaves and fishes, but he filso did not see the divine possibilities- in volved, for he asked, “What aré they among so many?” But the old axiom is ever true that “man’s extremity ’is God’s opportunity.” We need to realize our extremity. In the measure in -which we realize our own inadequate supply will we appropriate the full sufficiency in our Lord. IL T he U nseen R esource , (11-14) The first step in reaching the un seen resource is simple obedience to Christ (v. 10). With nothing ip sight to meet the need except the small loaves and fishes, and with even those unseen by the great majority of thé company, the question might be asked, “Why* sit down when there is nothing to eat?” The-second step is to surrender to Jesus Christ whatever may be f. pos sessed, no matter wh,éther it appears unsuitable »or inadequately small; The third step is to take from the Lord Jesus that which has passed through His hands and in turn pass it on to the waiting people. Perhaps the very- simplicity of this program hinders the action, but the action brings into view the mighty working of the Lord of all created things. III. T he S piritual R esource (30-35) The Lord Jesus left the crowd when they would make Him king (v. 15), but they followed Him, and He re buked them for seeking only material blessing from Him (vs. 26, 27). Their answer revealed the ~rebellion and hardnesk of their hearts: “What sign showest thou . . . ?” (v. 30). Their seeking of signs, in the midst of ál- ready clear manifestation of divine power, showed what they were—blind and unregenerated. “Seeing is believ ing” is maVi’s slogan; the Lord’s way -is “believing- is seeing.” . The Lord told them it was not Moses but God who had fed their, fathers in the wilderness, and God was present even then to feed them with the bread from heaven. In answer to their ques- tiorl, He openly declared Himself to be that Bread from heaven, saying, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger! and
'John 6^8 One of 'hi« disciples» Andrew* Simon Peter’s brother» saith unto him» 9 There Is a lad here» which hath five barley loaves» and two small fishes: but what are they among so many? 10 .And Jesus said, Make the men sit down. Now,there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down», in number about five thousand. 11 And Jesus , took the -loaves: and when he had given thanks» he distributed to the disciples» and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. 12 When they were filled» he said unto his disciples» Gather up the fragments that remain» that nothing be lost. 13 Therefore they gathered them to gether» and filled twelve baskets With the fragments of the five barley loaves» which remained oyer and above unto them that had eaten» 14 Then those men» when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did» said» This is *of a truth that Prophet that should come Into the *world. 30 They said therefore unto him» What sign showest thou then» that we may see» and believe thee? what dost thou.work? 31 Our fathers did eat manna in the desert: as it is written» He gave them bread from heaven to eat. 32 Then Jesus said unto them» Verily» verily» I say unto you» Moses gave you not that bread' from heaven; hut my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God Is h,e which cometh down from heaven» and giveth life unto the world. 34 Then said they unto him» Lord» evermore give us this bread. 35 And Jesus said unto them» I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger: and he that helieveth on me shall never thirst. LESSON 't’EXT : John 6:8-14^ 30-35. GOLDEN TEXT : i(Jesus said unto them» I am the bread of life” (John 6:35). DEVOTIONAL READING: Psa. 63:1-8. Outline and Exposition I. T h e S e e n R e s o u r c e (?-10 ) MULTITUDES that followed JesuS were hungry, ana that JL which the disciples had was wholly inadequate to meet the need. Jesus knew about the need, and He knew also- what He would do, but He would teach His disciples, as well as the multitude, a necessary lesson.
