UNSUNGHEROAWARD JOHNBLAKE - DESIGNERGROUP

John Blake from Designer Group was awarded with an Unsung Hero Award at Ireland’s Electrical Awards 2020 in recognition of his mental health mentoring and charity fundraising efforts. When not performing his day job as Site Manager at Designer Group, John is a mental health first-aider for his work colleagues and recently completed a gruelling Ironman Tour Challenge to raise funds for a local charity in South Dublin, Suicide or Survive (SOS). John is often the first point of contact for fellow employees who are struggling with their mental health. He provides a listening ear and steers them to the relevant support. “Gambling, drinking, drugs - you just never know how many lads or girls in canteens are struggling in silence with these kind of issues,” explains John.

He is also coaching and mentoring SOS members keen to raise funds for the charity through physical challenges. Some are suicide survivors and some are from the construction industry. Our judges agreed John has been

a phenomenal ambassador for our nation’s electrical industry and a fitting winner of this year’s award.
