EFI Nozomi White Ink Achieves Certification From WMU Pilot Plant Fremont, California based Electronics For Imaging (EFI) has received validation from the Western Michigan Uni- versity (WMU) Recycling, Paper and Coating Pilot Plant – a leading certification organization for corrugated recycling – that further verifies the recycling and repulpability of boards printed with white EFI Nozomi UV LED inks. The WMU Pilot Plant provided an OCC certification to EFI Nozomi white inks, extending the solid, research-driv- en evidence that Nozomi inkjet-printed corrugated boards can safely, efficiently and effectively enter recycling streams. This new certification follows the WMU Pilot Plant’s initial OCC certification provided for the EFI Nozomi C18000 printer’s CMYK four-color process ink set. EFI Nozomi inks are reportedly the first and only sin- gle-pass digital corrugated printer inks to achieve the certification, a key validation developed by modeling wax coating replacement protocols of the Fiber Boxboard As- sociation, a group that represents approximately 95 per- cent of all U.S. corrugators. The ability to recycle digitally printed corrugated board remains an important topic as corrugators and boxmakers adopt single-pass inkjet to implement highly efficient supply chains that reflect their customers’ need for customization and shorter order quantities.

of Toronto, are Alisha Giglio, Vladimiros G. Papangelakis, and Honghi Tran, who authored The Solubility of Calcium Carbonate in Green Liquor Handling Systems . Giglio, Papangelakis, and Tran conducted a systematic study to determine the solubility of CaCO3 in green liquor as a function of temperature, total titratable alkali (TTA), causticity, and sulfidity. The results show that the solubility increases with increased temperature, increased TTA, de- creased causticity, and decreased sulfidity. The new sol- ubility data was incorporated into OLI (a thermodynamic simulation program for aqueous salt systems) to generate a series of CaCO3 solubility curves for various green li- quor conditions. The results help explain how calcite scale forms in green liquor handling systems. TAPPI is the leading association for the worldwide packaging, paper, pulp, tissue and converting industries. Through information exchange, events, trusted content and networking opportunities, TAPPI helps members ele- vate their performance by providing solutions that lead to better, faster and more cost-effective ways of doing busi- ness. It has provided management training and network- ing to the industry’s leaders for more than 100 years. Nominations are open for 2021 TAPPI Awards, until Au- gust 1. Learn about the awards and nomination process at tappi.org . The 2021 awards are scheduled for presenta- tion at TAPPICon, April 25-28, 2021, in Atlanta, Georgia.
