SCT Acquires Honeymoon Paper Products, Inc. Chattanooga, Tennessee based Southern Champion Tray (SCT), an independent manu- facturer of paperboard packaging for the bak- ery and food service industry, has acquired substantially all the assets of Honeymoon Paper Products, Inc., based in Fairfield, Ohio, effective June 29, 2020. Founded in 1960, Honeymoon is a supermarket and retail bak- ery, deli, food service and wholesale packag- ing provider. SCT is integrating Honeymoon’s catalog items into the company’s offerings and pro- viding expanded printing technology for Hon- eymoon’s custom packaging business. This acquisition gives customers an even stronger portfolio of fiber-based products and inno- vative capabilities that were not previously available with the companies operating inde- pendently. According to SCT’s President and CEO John Zeiser, “This acquisition makes a lot of sense for both Southern Champion and Honeymoon customers as we are expanding the breadth of our product line and scope of our manufacturing capabilities. OSHA Revised Guidance On COVID To Affect Recordable Cases BY MARY DRAIN The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has published revised guid-

outcome. This is a change from the agency’s position in April 10 guidance, and it affects our industry. To meet OSHA recording obligations, the employ- er must first determine whether a “confirmed case of COVID-19” (see [2] of the revised guidance), is work-relat- ed ( … an event or exposure in the work environment, 29 CFR § 1904.5(b)(1).) In most instances, doing the following will satisfy the employer’s obligations: 1. Ask the employee(s) how they believe their COVID-19 illness was contracted; 2. While respecting employee privacy, discuss with them their work and out-of-work activities that may have led to the COVID-19 illness; and 3. Review the employee’s work environment for poten- tial SARS-CoV-2 exposure. A best practice FBA recommends when asked about regulations and reporting is to document your process and rationale so you can accurately recall the circumstanc-

ance for its occupational illness re- cordkeeping requirements. The new revised guidance is intended to be time-limited to the current COVID-19 public health crisis. The previous memorandum has been rescinded. Starting May 26, 2020, OSHA requires most employers with more

than 10 employees to record work-related employee COVID-19 cases. Employers must record and report all employee-related COVID-19 illnesses regardless of the

DS Smith Ready To Produce Cardboard Cutouts To Fill Empty Sports Stadiums

DS Smith recently announced the launch of its design and manufac- turing plans, which includes an initial approach to the National Basketball Association, Major League Baseball and Major League Soccer – offering quick and sustainable options for teams wanting to fill empty venues. “We look to sports as a unifier, and that’s been missing. We want to help solve that,” said Barry Nelson, Managing Director of Sales, Marketing and Innovation for the North America Packaging and Paper Division of DS Smith. “By using a versatile material like cardboard, we can support teams across the country to design a unique atmosphere while fans stay home to maintain social distancing because of the coronavirus.” DS Smith is a veteran international player on the packaging scene, and recently expanded its North American box making and recycling opera- tions. In the UK, it already is producing customized, branded “fans,” made of recycled, corrugated material. They easily slip over stadium seats, and soccer clubs in Europe are allowing the replica supporters to be displayed during matches. They’ll have arms raised, some in a V for victory, and with in-house pre-print capabilities, can be custom designed in a combination of tones, in solid or striped clothing to match team colors and even holding images of a foam finger or baseball bat. Sporting events across the country are working on safe ways to move forward, some limiting the number of spectators and others prohibiting any onsite, the result of physical-distancing measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The NBA is among those close to resuming its abbreviated season, beginning next month at Walt Disney World in Florida. And MLB has issued a 60-game schedule to start in late July in empty ballparks. The DS Smith plant in Lebanon, Indiana, for example, can produce more than 50,000 durable, corrugated fans in an eight-hour shift. FSEA Recognizes 27th Annual Gold Leaf Award Winners

Entries were received from countries around the world, including the U.S., Canada, Denmark and Taiwan. Gold, silver and bronze winners were honored in 37 cat- egories. Best of Show and two Best of Show Honorable Mention honorees were also revealed. DataGraphic in Commack, New York, was awarded the Best of Show award for “Stag&Hare Honey Box,” which was entered in the category of Best Use of Foil/ Embossing – Folding Carton (Technical Difficulty). The carton was a promotional piece for Stag&Hare’s customers, showcasing four jars of honey varieties in a custom “jewelry box” featuring tactile textures and fin- ishes throughout. The outer box, honey jar cartons, hon- ey jar insert trays and position-mounted inside flap card were created from a matte black soft-touch paper and decorated with gold foil and gloss spot UV varnish, along with screen-printed colors. Once the decorative boxes were coated and foil stamped, they were individually die- cut, with each piece being hand-fed to en- sure perfect registration.

The Foil & Specialty Effects Association (FSEA) has an- nounced the honorees in its 27th Annual FSEA Gold Leaf Awards Competition. AICC Webinar Focuses On Packaging And E-Commerce, Post COVID-19 AICC, The Independent Packaging Association, with the support of HP, brought members a free webinar, E-Com- merce & Corrugated Packaging Post COVID-19, on June 15. Presenters Ron Sasine, Principal, Hudson Windsor LLC, and Ted Samotis, Director of Go-To-Market, HP PageWide Industrial Corrugated, HP, shared their insights about e-commerce, digital printing, and new opportunities. Pan- elist Mark Mathes, CEO, Vanguard Packaging, and Louie DeJesus, Owner, CompanyBox, also shared some of the secrets to their success. “We’re glad to provide AICC members, converters and brands, HP’s professional knowledge, to better embrace e-commerce opportunities with digital corrugated press- es,” said Sharon Chesler, Marketing Manager, HP PWI Cor- rugated. “With HP PageWide customer panel discussion, this webinar became a live platform for Q&A by attendees to industry experts like Vanguard Packaging and Compa- nyBox.” At the beginning of the webinar, Sasine shared several statistics about the e-commerce market, including “e-com- merce of consumer packaged goods totals $36 billion and is growing at five times the growth rate of conventional retail.” He noted, “We saw declines in the early parts of this year, and we will continue to see some declines across the broader corrugated market, but there are opportuni- ties and windows of growth within that declining segment over the next year or 18 months. That means we will face challenges, and those who are equipped will succeed.” He went on to discuss e-commerce consumer trends and the growth of customization and the continued move away from standardization. The ability to customize and provide additional value to customers is one of the “win- dows.” “Customization creates opportunities at different plac- es in the supply chain,” Sasine said. “In the digital print world, we will see expanded offerings, touching both high-volume and low-volume prices allows for extreme quality in the print and variability, changeovers. There is a massive opportunity in digital simplicity. There is also a massive opportunity in logistics and tracking with tied-to- data management.” Later in the webinar, Mathes, using an example from Vanguard Packaging to show they had used tied-to-data management as one part of a packaging overhaul they lead for a customer. To better understand the customer, Mathes ordered one of their products, a pair of hunting boots, and then analyzed the packaging it came in to see how they could take that packaging and emulate the expe- rience of buying it in a store. The first step was to add the name of the company on the box. This was a simple solution that helps cut through

transformed the customers’ packaging from a brown box with a litho label to unique, customized packaging that could include on the box, in the box, and a call to action for the consumer. “Brands large and small have effectively used the flex- ibility and agility of digital printing, but more importantly of a digital packaging supply chain, to make it easier to deliver via e-commerce and make it more profitable,” said Samotis. DeJesus explained how CompanyBox is giving their customers tools and empowering them to make more of their packaging decisions. Among other tools, Compa- nyBox provides their customers with instant pricing and graphic tools for beginners and experienced designers. CompanyBox uses a highly automated web to print platform, which includes proofing, pre-press, scheduling, sheet stock ordering, and invoicing, to shorten lead time. They are also launching the 2.0 version of their online package builder that will have a 3D preview of the packag- ing for one and two-sided printing. Predesigned templates are also offered to help their customers get started. They are also offering more customizable options, like tape, tis- sue, and inserts. the clutter on the front step, just as package designers try to cut through the clutter on a store shelf. Vanguard wanted to offer their customer the chance to separate themselves from the other boxes piling up on a porch and begin to build the excitement a consumer might feel in a store. Vanguard then moved into inside the box printing to create a message. The flaps showed other people doing the activities the purchaser wanted to do with the boots, hunting, fishing, etc. The design also included store infor- mation and a QR code for the company’s loyalty program, which triggered an email that offered a discount off of the next purchase and a way to send pictures to the company of the customer using the boots. The sides of the interior of the box were even designed to look like targets, so the packaging would be more than just a shipper. Mathes explained that the entire redesign took about an hour for his art department. Samotis began by saying, “Independent converters have a real opportunity to design supply chains and solu- tions, similar to the growth of the display business, which is analogous to e-commerce. Retail went to local grocers, big box stores, Walmarts, and is now moving into e-com- merce supply chains.” Using case studies from The BoxMaker and Compa- nyBox, Samotis showed how, using digital printing, they

The Phoenix Process has been licensed by a number of facilities to produce sustainable packaging, molded products, tissue and toweling, and more. Today, Lewis is CEO of both SFT and Phoenix Pulp and Polymer. Lewis began his education in pulping non-woods 40 years ago, pulping corn stover alongside Dr. Herb Schro- eder at Colorado State University. His corporate career started at the Weyerhaeuser research department in Longview, Washington. He joined TAPPI in 1978 and within a year was involved in the various testing division com- mittees. He finished his Weyerhaeuser tenure in the Pa- permaking Research Group working on the Extended Nip Project and felt development and prediction models. After a stint with Noram Testing Equipment, Lewis went back into research as a papermaking research manager for a precipitated calcium carbonate manufacturer, a job that took him to fine paper mills across North America. Lewis spent 17 years at the University of Washington teaching papermaking, fiber physics, and pulping and bleaching. There, he renewed his research work in nonwood pulp- ing, knowing as a papermaker that if he could have good fibers, he could make good paper. In 2015, Lewis left the university to start SFT and develop the Phoenix Process. Today, ten of his former students work for SFT, and the Phoenix Process is being used on a number of biomass materials in North America. Lewis has been an active TAPPI member and served as TAPPI Student Chapter Faculty Advisor at the University of Washington from 1999-2014. He served TAPPI’s Pacific Local Section and now chairs the Nonwood Committee. Gordon Bugg Gordon Bugg was named the recipient of TAPPI’s Her- man L. Joachim Distinguished Service Award.
