Province petitions feds for farm aid
Eastern Ontario again towards the end of last month. He announced plans to lobby the federal government to speed up tax relief help for livestock producers whose operations are suffering from the heat- wave situation. McMeeking wants the fed- eral government to follow the province’s example and hurry up with recognition of “Prescribed Drought Regions” in Ontario (PDR) so that farmers and livestock outfits become eligible for government aid. The provincial government is sending a request to the federal agriculture ministry to work with its Ontario counterpart in as- sessing support options for livestock pro-

Eastern Ontario | A couple recent thunder- storms with their deluges of rain provided some welcome relief from the heatwave that kept Ontario close to bone-dry dur- ing July but they still were not enough to end drought-like conditions affecting much of the province’s rural farmland ar- eas. provals. “This project is the largest, most complex infrastructure project in the city’s history and today we have achieved a very impor- tant milestone,” stated Mayor Jim Watson in a news release. “The federal government’s endorsement of our approach is a critical step for us as we move towards finishing the RFP and selecting the team that will build this project.” City Hall will now continue with the re- quest for proposals (RFP) part of the project procurement process. There is a short list of three world-class groups able to organize and build an LRT system. Final review and
ratification of the chosen consortium will take place later this year so that project con- struction can begin early next year. The LRT project is expected to create $3.2 billion in economic spinoffs and 20,000 jobs during the construction phase. The design system is for a 10,000-person carrying capacity on an hourly basis in both directions during morning rush-hour. The system should shave 15 minutes off daily commutes for transit riders. included bicycles and power tools. Some of the thefts occurred while resi- dents were at home, either while they were inside the house or else out in the backyard. In most cases reported to the police, the garage doors were left open, making it easy for snatch-and-grab thieves to stroll in, col- lect anything easy to carry or move with little noise, and then leave. The police remind homeowners to close and lock all garage and storage shed doors and windows when those parts of the premises are not in active use.
