Les promoteurs locaux rencontrent le ministre de l’Énergie

« [...] les promoteurs immo- biliers jouent un rôle impor- tant dans la croissance de nos communautés » Cette séance de discussion à huis clos entre Chris Bentley et les promoteurs immobiliers est organisée par Grant Crack, député provincial. Les discussions porteront principalement sur le dépôt d’expansion de Hydro One nouvellement mis en place en octobre 2011. Celle-ci per- met à la société d’exiger des promoteurs immobiliers un dépôt pour l’expansion des services d’Hydro One. Ce dépôt vise à protéger la société dans le cas où les revenus prévus pour l’expansion ne se réalisent pas, et des risques reliés à la construction et l’exploitation des instal- lations. Le dépôt couvrira la totalité des coûts reliés à l’expansion du réseau. La rencontre doit avoir lieu à 19 h 30, dans une salle de conférence de l’hôtel RiverRock Inn. « Je crois que les promoteurs immo- biliers jouent un rôle important dans la croissance de nos communautés », a pré- cisé le député. L’accent sera mis sur l’impact de cette nouvelle politique sur les promoteurs immobiliers. Le ministre ainsi que des représentants expliqueront le fonc- tionnement de la politique. Ils enten- dront les préoccupations des promoteurs. Ceux-ci expliqueront à leur tour comment cette politique pourrait affecter leurs pro- jets actuels et futurs. Les deux partis dis- cuteront également de solution afin que la politique fonctionne dans un intérêt mutuel. « Ce sera un plaisir de rencontrer les promoteurs immobiliers dans l’objectif de faciliter les discussions, la compréhension et la coopération pour nous permettre d’avancer », a commenté Grant Crack.

Le mois dernier, le premier ministre a rencontré les membres de l’Association des chefs de pompiers de l’Ontario afin de discuter de la question des gicleurs et des autres moyens d’assurer la sécurité en cas d’incendie. En avril, l’Ontario a mis sur pied un comité consultatif technique chargé de formuler des recommandations sur une stratégie de sécurité-incendie en plusieurs volets prévoyant l’installation de gicleurs dans les maisons de retraite, les foyers de soins de longue durée et les établissements

ONTARIO | La province s’engage à faire en sorte qu’un plus grand nombre de résidences pour personnes âgées soient équipées de gicleur. Cette annonce fait suite en quelque sorte à la tragédie survenue au mois de mai à la Place Mont-Roc, une maison de retraite à Hawkesbury. Un incendie avait coûté la vie à un couple. La résidence, construite dans les années 80, n’avait pas été équipée
hébergeant des personnes vulnérables, ainsi que d’autres mesures de prévention (formation, inspections, dispositifs de fermeture de portes, etc.). Le gouvernement a accéléré ces démarches de quatre mois afin de garantir que le comité consultatif technique remette ses premières recommandations à l’automne. Il s’est en outre engagé à veiller à ce qu’un plus grand nombre de maisons de retraite et de foyers de soins de longue durée de la province soient équipés de gicleurs. « Des dons deux fois supérieurs à la nourriture volée » EMBRUN | Un mal pour un bien pourrait- on presque dire. Deux semaines après le vol de la Banque alimentaire, les dons spontanément offerts par la communauté en réaction au vol montent désormais à 4000 $, l’équivalent de deux fois le mon- tant de nourriture dérobée. « C’est inespéré », assure Lisette Thibault, sa présidente, la voix émue. Dernière action en date : les quelque 843 articles de nourriture ainsi que 650 $ obtenus après l’organisation la semaine dernière d’un « ice-cream social » par le restaurant Fill Yer Boots à Russell. Au cours des derniers jours, la présidente a pu également vérifier le vaste élan de solidarité. Et ce, bien au-delà des frontières de la municipalité. Contrairement à ce qui était initialement prévu, le magasin Bytown Lumber de Limoges offrira à la Banque ali- mentaire les recettes de son tournoi de golf prévu à la fin août. Un résident d’Ottawa a également effectué une promesse de don de plus de 3 millions de tonnes de nourri- ture. « Une femme de Surrey en Colombie- Britannique a même donné quelque chose », déclare la présidente.

Cumberland councillor demands City Hall draft anti-gangs and guns action plan for Ottawa
believe we should shy away or abdicate our responsibility with respect to this critical issue as the safety of our residents is para- mount.” Blais noted that Ottawa Police Services “does a wonderful job” of enforcing laws in the city and surrounding areas. A com- prehensive action plan on gangs and gun- violence would help with coordinating resources and putting more emphasis on proactive prevention. Development of the action would involve police services, City Hall, and key non-profit social issue groups. “By ensuring our crime-prevention mea- sures are centrally coordinated,”stated Blais, “we can ensure the programs are being run where they are needed most and are do- ing the most good. The kids who are gang- bangers were not born wanting to be this way. Posters of athletes on their walls have been replaced with guns in their hands.” Last year the City of Ottawa had 23 gun-
related incidents. The first half of this year has seen 27 cases for police investigation involving guns. Blais will also ask Ottawa Police Services to look into offering a gun amnesty pro- gram to get illegal guns off the streets. Be- tween 1992 and 1999 such programs were set up several times with about 2400 fire- arms turned over to police. The Cumberland Ward councillor will also ask city administration to review and up- date the municipal bylaw on private shoot- ing within municipal boundaries. He noted that the new Millennium Park in his own ward is located within the rural boundary area where private shooting is al- lowed. Blais will also demand a new zoning des- ignation for shops that sell guns and am- munition. City zoning regulations have specific rules dealing with strip clubs and drive-through service windows but nothing specific dealing with firearms.
“Let me be clear that I am not asking city staff to venture into areas of provincial or federal responsibility,” stated Blais, “or more importantly, proposing any ideas that tar- get farmers or hunters. We can implement a gun amnesty program, close loopholes where guns and ammunition are sold, and ensure that the discharging of firearms does not occur where children study or play.” The Cumberland ward councillor will ask the provincial government for amend- ments to legislation on public housing to prevent violent criminals and gangs from gaining easy access to low-cost housing. “People living in public housing have a tough enough life,” he stated, “and so we should not subject them even further by liv- ing side-by-side with gangsters, who have no respect for life. The provincial govern- ment should allow us to ban thugs, convict- ed of serious crimes, especially ones involv- ing guns, from living off of the taxpayer in public housing.” “One of my first priorities following the election was to secure the funding neces- sary to significantly expedite the building of this much-needed community park.” Vista Park is now scheduled for comple- tion in 2013 and will feature multi-use fields for soccer and high school football, a win- ter ice rink, a multi-use court for summer basketball and a winter puddle ice rink, a splash pad, play structures for various age groups, individual pathways designated for jogging, rollerblading, and stroller-walking, a skateboard area, along with benches, pic- nic tables, and shade trees.

Cumberland | Recent and tragic shooting incidents in Toronto and elsewhere have prompted one of Ottawa’s rural council- lors to demand a detailed action plan for the city to prevent such tragedies fromoc- curring in the nation’s capital. Cumberland Ward Coun. Stephen Blais will present a motion during the next city council session asking for city administra- tion and the police department to develop a “comprehensive action plan” to support existing senior government efforts to deal with gun crimes. “We should have a made-in-Ottawa ac- tion plan to support the provincial and fed- eral governments’ efforts to stamp out gun violence in our communities,” stated Blais in a press release. “As a city councillor, I don’t

Orléans | By this time next year children in the Avalon subdivision should have a new neighbourhood park for their play area. Cumberland ward Coun. Stephen Blais and Don Pettipas, president for the Vista Park Community Association (VPCA) both put their hands and feet on the shovel for the ceremonial groundbreaking on the $1.9 million Vista Park project. The neighbourhood park project was first scheduled for design and public consulta- tion in 2006 but budget constraints pushed the schedule back to 2013. Aided through lobbying work from Blais’office, city officials and representatives for the Minto develop- ment group were able re-schedule the pub- lic consultation and design work for 2011. “The residents of Avalon have been wait- ing for years to see some progress made on Vista Park,” Blais stated in a news release.

PLANTAGENET | Le 6e tournoi de golf an- nuel des paramédics de Prescott et Rus- sell, tenu récemment, a permis d’amasser un profit net de 15 000 $, lequel sera remis à la Fondation Fais-Un-Voeu de l’Est On- tario. Depuis les six dernières années, les para- médics de Prescott et Russell ont amassé plus de 65 000 $ pour la Fondation. Police put brakes on bad driver
Hawkesbury | An Alfred man will be either walking or begging family and friends for rides for awhile. The OPP had a mid-July checkstop set up at the Long Sault Bridge between Hawkes- bury and Québec. A white 2001 Oldsmobile Alero came swerving up to the checkpoint, rolling on the rim of one wheel as the driv- er’s side front tire was gone. Police found the driver in a state of ex- treme intoxication, with an open bottle of liquor sitting between his legs, and an open bottle of beer sitting on the passenger seat. The driver proved uncooperative and was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and also assaulting a police officer.
A vehicle search turned up some cocaine and marijiuana. A computer records check showed that the 53-year-old driver was in breach of a prohibited driving order. The man now faces charges of impaired driving, driving with a blood-alcohol con- tent exceeding 80 milligrams, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, assault- ing a police officer, breach of probation, possession of cocaine and marijuana, fail- ing to surrender his vehicle permit, driving with an improper tire, causing damage to a highway, failure to produce an insurance card, and driving with liquor ready to hand. The car was put in 45-day impound and the driver’s licence suspended for 90 days.

« C’est un endroit de conversation, où on peut lire le journal en savourant un bon café. C’est un troisième chez nous si on veut. » Le bistro, situé au 2509, rue Laurier à Rockland, est en marche depuis quelques semaines maintenant. L’idée remonte toutefois à il y a plus de 10 ans. « On vou- lait que les gens aient une place pour jaser à Rockland, raconte Mme Salois. Qu’ils soi- ent transportés dans un autre endroit que le centre-ville. » Le bâtiment abritait jadis un centre hy- pothécaire dirigé par Marie-France Lavigne. Cette dernière est aujourd’hui coproprié- taire du café Bocado au côté de Manon Salois. « Nous avons toujours été entrepre- neurs. Pour moi, c’est un premier saut dans le domaine de la restauration. » De 7 h à 21 h, du lundi au dimanche, le café Bocado est prêt à accueillir les gens avec un menu léger et équilibré : panini, salade du jour, soupe du jour, quiche du jour pour en nommer quelques-uns. « On ne manque pas de restaurant-minute à Rockland, c’est pourquoi nous sommes très consciencieux des ingrédients qu’on utilise pour avoir une certaine signature à ce niveau-là ». La quali- té des plats est assurée par un chef pâtissier, Julie Madore-Gravelle, et un chef chargé du menu du jour, Elizabeth Roberts.

De leur côté, Marie-France Lavigne et Manon Salois ont toutes suivi des cours de barista, ceux qui se spécialisent dans la préparation et le service du café. Bocado est distributeur du café de Equator Coffee, renommé dans la région. Il arrive frais et tor- réfié toutes les semaines. À l’intérieur, au haut de l’escalier, la salle est un endroit propice à la tenue de petite réception et conférence. Le café offre égale- ment un accès à Internet par une connexion wi-fi. Les couleurs privilégiées sont le jaune et le marron. « Le jaune c’est une couleur qui met les gens de bonne humeur, c’est une couleur qui entraîne la conversation. On a fait dans le neuf et le vieux avec le bois de grange, des meubles aux styles antique et contemporain. » Pour ce qui est du nom Bocado, il a été emprunté de l’espagnol qui veut dire bou- chée. « On ne voulait pas débattre le fran-
çais et l’anglais. Mais principalement, Bo- cado résonnait bien à nos oreilles », a confié Mme Salois. De la couture à la cuisine Manon Salois a fait ses débuts en affaires dans le domaine de la haute-couture. Elle a participé à diverses compétitions dont celle de Miss Canada. Cet emploi l’a amené à voyager à travers le Canada et les États- Unis. Elle est également auteure du livre de technique de couture The Haute Couture of the Cut Sew Technique Using Knit Fabric. Il y a dix ans, elle a mis un terme à cette carrière afin d’être plus près de ses enfants. Elle a offert ses services d’administration au centre hypothécaire, à l’emploi de Marie- France Lavigne. Il y a deux ans est venue la décision de fermer le centre ou de le réuti- liser à d’autre usage. C’est ainsi que le café Bocado a vu le jour.
