HOW PHYSICAL THERAPY CAN HELP RUNNERS

Now that summer is in full swing all over New Jersey, it seems like everybody is getting out and going for a jog. Running and walking are certainly both great ways to stay in shape and get a little exercise, but they can also occasionally lead to some pretty serious injuries. If you’re an avid runner, you probably already know how frustrating it feels to be couch-bound by a nasty flare-up of pain. A Powerful Tool for Recovery

That’s the bad news. The good news is that most running injuries are treatable with a round of physical therapy.

Take plantar fasciitis , for example. This injury occurs when the thick band of connective tissue between your heel and your toes becomes irritated, inflamed, or in the worst cases, torn. Most of the time, the injury won’t bother sufferers all day long, instead flaring up when patients first jump out of bed in the morning or take the first steps after an extended period of sitting at the computer. Then there’s runner’s knee , a condition that has plagued joggers and competitive athletes since time immemorial. Runner’s knee can flare up as the result of strength imbalances, flexibility issues, or overtraining, but it generally manifests as pain in the front of the knee. This pain can be a dull ache or a stabbing sensation, as components in the kneecap become misaligned from the femoral groove. Pain is typically worst after going up hills or stairs, going for a jog, or again, after sitting down for a long time.

These are only two of the most common injuries runners suffer from. There are a whole host of others that come from all kinds of imbalances in the body, but nearly all of them can be addressed through physical therapy. After scheduling a consultation with us, you’ll come in and we’ll break down your particular injury, running you through a few tests to determine the exact nature of your issue. Then we’ll set you up with a detailed exercise and treatment plan to steadily heal your injury and get you back to running before you know it. Don’t let injury keep you from doing what you love.
