people, but the train station wasn’t expecting such a rush of people all at once. It took a long time to get on a train home.

This is also the time of year when I think of all the veterans who fought for our country. Our Independence Day serves to celebrate when the United

There are two big topics on my mind this month, the Fourth of July in Chicago and our nonprofit organization, Warrior Smiles.

The Fourth is a special time when you can bring your family closer together to watch fireworks and reflect on the birth of our country. I celebrate the Fourth by going up to Chicago to spend time with my family. I’m originally from the area, and it’s great to see the city and spend time with them. We usually head down to Navy Pier to watch the fireworks display along Lake Michigan and then stay in the city to experience Taste of Chicago. It’s a family vacation that we look forward to each year.

States of America became an independent nation. I always remember those who endeavored to make that happen and the people who continue to protect our independence today. I have always admired our veterans and what they’ve done for us. I wanted to show my appreciation to them and thought, “What better way than to provide them with a better smile?” We at Elite Smiles started a nonprofit organization called Warrior Smiles. The organization services any veterans who come through our doors all year with free dental implants. It wasn’t until recently that Warrior Smiles became an entity, but we had been thinking about it and serving veterans long before it came into fruition. One of our board members, Amy Shindler, is a veteran who served in Iraq. Amy is at the forefront of Warrior Smiles, giving her all as we try to help veterans out as best we can.

Taste of Chicago takes place in Grant Park and lasts for five days each summer. Restaurants throughout the whole city set up tents there, where anyone can stop by and try the different foods they offer. It’s a great chance to sample cuisine that you can’t find anywhere else. I always look forward to the pizza in Chicago, especially my favorite, Gino’s East pizza. If you’re used to Chicago’s famous pizza, you might look at a New York slice, for example, and wonder, “Where’s the rest of it?” I’ve been going to Taste of Chicago ever since I was a kid. One year, my family and I went, but we didn’t expect things to get as crazy as they did. That particular year, there was a massive thunderstorm that hit right in the middle of Taste of Chicago. I remember the lightning and thunder being incredible. The streets ended up flooding because all the garbage from the event clogged up the drains, and the city filled with at least a foot of water. When I was living in the area, we lived out in the suburbs and would take the commuter train to go into the city. When the storm hit, there were close to a million people running for cover and into the train stations. Making our way back home was difficult. Not only was it hot and humid with the combination of the weather and the number of

“I WANTED TO SHOW MY APPRECIATION TO THEM, AND THOUGHT, ‘WHAT BETTER WAY THAN TO PROVIDE THEM WITH A BETTER SMILE?’”

Take some time this month to spend with your family and reflect on how important our veterans are. Whether you throw a barbecue, wave a flag, or watch fireworks, I hope you have a wonderful July.

CEREC TECHNOLOGY: A CROWN THAT TAKES MINUTES TheAffordable, Leave Our Office Smiling!

THESE MALLS WERE MADE FOR Walking THE EXERCISE VENUE THAT WILL KEEP YOU COOL AND FIT

If you’re young at heart and looking to stay (or get) in shape this summer, consider taking a trip to the mall. No, not to pick up some hot new exercise product or dietary supplement, but to walk a few laps. Safe and convenient, “mall walking” has become one of the biggest trends in senior fitness. Cool in the Summer, Warm in the Winter This time of year, heatstroke can be a real concern when exercising outside. But that doesn’t mean you have to be a homebody. Because malls are spacious and climate-controlled, they make great year-round walking venues, especially when summer temperatures spike. You don’t even need to put on sunscreen! Rest Stops Abound While the average American shopping center isn’t as scenic as the Appalachian Trail, they are far more convenient. Replete with bathrooms, cool drinking water, and plenty of benches, the mall lets you focus on exercising and removes all of the “what ifs” that come with aging. Most malls are also outfitted with EMT kits in the event of a medical emergency. Squeeze in Some Shopping It is still a mall, after all. Why not check a few items off your shopping list or reward yourself with a new pair of sneakers? Getting things done as you exercise makes the experience that much more rewarding. Just remember not to overdo it. Carrying too many shopping bags can place undue stress on your back — and your wallet. You Won’t Be Alone Today, malls are the second-most popular places to walk in America, after neighborhoods. Mall walking has become so big that many communities and senior living centers have put together official groups to stride together. Your local mall may already open early to accommodate walkers. So if you’re looking to make friends in an active, fun-loving community, do some research. Chances are there’s a mall-walking club near you!

In the hectic world we live in today, people often find themselves rushing between work, home, and life’s other demands. Squeezing a dentist appointment into your busy schedule for a crown can seem near impossible at times, let alone two appointments to address this one problem. That’s where the services of Elite Smiles and CEREC can change that. CEREC allows the dentists at Elite Smiles to create and apply a dental crown the same day as an appointment. Traditionally, without the use of CEREC, getting a crown for your tooth takes several dentist appointments. The first appointment is usually to assess the tooth and make an impression of it. The dentists would then send you home with a temporary crown while your authentic crown is created. CEREC eliminates the time between tooth assessment and getting the crown placed.

When you walk into Elite Smiles for a crown appointment, the dentists will do the following steps using CEREC technology:

• Examine your teeth to determine the most appropriate restoration. • Develop a treatment plan. • Remove any decayed or weakened tooth tissue. • Take a digital picture of your mouth. • Convert the digital picture into a 3D model on a computer screen using state-of-the-art CAD/CAM (Computer-Aided Design/Computer-Aided Manufacturing) software. • Create a dental restoration based on the 3D model. • Mill your restoration from a block of tooth-colored material.

WIN A WEEKEND IN JEKYLL ISLAND Win a $500 gift card to the Jekyll Island Club Resort and a $100 gift card to purchase a boat tour of your choice!

WAYS TO ENTER

From these steps, your CEREC restoration will be completed in a few minutes. The skilled dentists at Elite Smiles will then check the restoration to ensure that it fits properly and bond it into place. The dental restoration will then be polished, completing your treatment within one hour! You don’t have to wait or make multiple appointments for a dental crown that you need today. Elite Smiles welcomes you to reach out at 904.201.3806 to learn more about the benefits of CEREC technology and to schedule an appointment. Leave the dentist with a smile!

Sourcing the Sweet-Smelling Stuff Call it a pseudoscientific fad or a medical revolution; either way, essential oils are more popular today than they have ever been. Though research on the efficacy of lavender, ginger, and the dozens of other sweet-smelling oils is conflicting at best, people are using them at an astonishing rate. In fact, according to Stratistics MRC, essential oils were a $5.91 billion industry in 2016 and are expected to reach $12.85 billion by 2023.

are other methods, such as expression (aka cold pressing), but because steam distillation is so easy to do, most essential oils you see on the shelf will have gone through this process. Lavender essential oil is harvested from sheaves of lavandula angustifolia , that purple herb you see all over gardens across the United States. There are lavender farms all over the world, from California to Japan to Brazil, but the biggest world producer of lavender is, interestingly, Bulgaria. Tea Tree oil comes from the leaves of melaleuca alternifolia , commonly known as narrow-leaved paperbark, a short, bushy tree that produces white, fluffy flowers in the spring. The trees are endemic to Australia, but today are usually farmed in New South Wales or Queensland. Bergamot is distilled from the peels of lime-green bergamot oranges, or citrus bergamia . Most of it comes from coastal areas around the Ionian Sea. Whatever you do with it, use it sparingly on your skin — it can amplify skin damage from the sun!

Whether you’re an essential oil acolyte or fly into a rage at the faintest hint of bergamot, your mind is probably already made up about aromatherapy. The question remains, though: Where does all this delicious-smelling stuff come from? Most essential oils are derived from a process called steam distillation . Soon after harvest, the plants are placed on a mesh inside a sealed still, into which steam is injected. As the steam rises and envelops the plant, it breaks it down and lifts its constituent components up through a tube and into a condenser. The condenser cools the resulting vapor and collects it in liquid form at the bottom. Since essential oils do not mix with water, they float on the surface, where they’re siphoned off, bottled, and shipped off to a distributor. There Take a Break
