WICHITA’S HANGER

March Madness Comes to Wichita … And What It’s Really About

March 2018

Hey Wichita, March is bringing some big events our way! It’s basketball season, and we’ve got some talented athletes playing ball in our town. We’ll get to see six NCAA games this year because the games are taking place right here in Wichita at the Intrust Arena. It’s been 14 years since our town hosted an NCAA tournament, and they’re back. There’s a lot of basketball fans out there, and you know what a fun March Madness it’s going to be. If you’re not a basketball fan, you might wonder how us crazed fans get a case of March Madness. I can’t speak for everyone, but I know when I watch a game, I’m riveted by how a whole team can achieve such a high level of excellence. Flawless passes, jump shots, three pointers — it’s a whole other language that’s said with few words and fast, well-placed footwork. How do they achieve any of that? Because they operate as a team.

That brings to mind a client who was facing a near-crisis on her wedding day. She thought her mother-in-law was picking up her dress, and her mother-in-law thought she was picking it up. It was half an hour before the wedding, and they were frantic. What happened? Our team came to the rescue. We ended up personally delivering the dress to the relieved bride. We felt like we saved the day, and we were able to do for our client what we would want in her situation. When someone is unemployed, we’ll clean their clothes for free. We also discount that service to people with health challenges and to new moms. It’s the type of service we’d hope for if we were in their situation. Our team is just an extension of my family (as you know, many of them are actual family), and our clients are an extension of that family. It’s not uncommon for our staff to have an order ready before a client even walks in the door, because they recognized the client’s car as it was pulling up to the store.

When it comes to my business, I try to use that same idea.

In the Bag Cleaners was awarded the 2018 Family Business Award by the Wichita Business Journal this January. We were so honored to be included among the other great local companies recognized by the Wichita Business Journal. Thank you for being part of our journey.

It also makes me think about what it really takes to keep an all-star team going strong.

A long time ago, I decided that my business would perform best if it was less reliant on me. Since then, I’ve learned to find joy in delegating and helping my team members grow their individual and group skills. We celebrate victories and are there for each other through challenges. I want to encourage my team to be the best it can be. One of our biggest strengths as a team is that we have a very service- oriented heart. Our job is defined by how well we serve other people. Every day, we put ourselves in someone else’s shoes to figure out what we would want if we were in their situation.

They say there’s no ‘I’ in team. That’s true. What it’s really all about, at the end of the day, is you.

KEEPING UP WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

What You Need to Do to Stay On Track and Push Forward

March is the month of spring time and rejuvenation. It’s also the time when most people have forgotten about the resolutions and goals they set earlier in the year. Have you neglected or given up your goals? If you have, you are far from alone. Most people let their goals fall to the wayside at least by March, if not long before. It comes down to four simple reasons.

hobby, but they don’t define their goals any further. Vague goals aren’t really goals at all.

The best way to stay on track is to be as specific as possible. Understand what you need to do to accomplish your goals. Make sure you have access to the appropriate resources that will help you make progress. Resources come in all forms. Look to the people around you for accountability — your family, friends, neighbors, or colleagues. If you don’t want to involve anyone else, keep a notebook or diary to track progress. Or if you are learning a new skill, such as a foreign language for a trip next year, the resource you need may be an app on your phone. When you bring specific goals together with the necessary resources, achieving your dreams becomes more possible than ever before. You just have to take steps to avoid falling into the mistakes listed above. Set attainable, concrete goals, track your progress, and check in with someone to keep you accountable. Since it’s been a few months, take a moment to review how far you’ve come since January. What do you need to do to make the next three months — and the rest of 2018 — your best yet? his belongings, and was just stopping by the store to drop off some clothes. She ended up staying for over 30 minutes because the retail team made her feel at ease. This client was able to let some of her grief go thanks to the warm, welcoming environment that Claire has helped cultivate. Claire’s natural leadership abilities shine through in her role. “I get to be there to motivate and help guide everyone and help them better serve our clients. I really enjoy it.” After work, Claire heads home to her husband and 2-year-old son, Greyson. The three of them usually head outside to play in the backyard. They’re an active family. One night a week, Claire plays competitive volleyball, and she and her husband play on a co-ed softball team in the spring. Claire is grateful for the “really awesome team” she works with as well as her own leader. “I’m fortunate to be at In The Bag Cleaners and to have as phenomenal an owner and team leader as Dave.”

Feeling Tired? Your Blanket May Be the Culprit The Importance of Keeping Your Bedding Clean

Zesty Zucchini Enchiladas

You’ve probably heard Arianna Huffington talk about the importance of a good night’s rest. Lack of sleep can be hard on your health, and you can suffer some serious long-term effects from inadequate zzz’s. You know that getting enough sleep is important, but what about the quality of those eight hours? Researchers are finding more and more links between poor sleep and higher risk of disease. One study has found an association between air pollution and poor sleep. A possible cause of that pollution? Your bed. While your bed might be comfortable, cushy, and have just the right mattress type, if you’re not washing your bedding frequently, it may be exposing you to unwanted health risks. Bacteria, sweat, and all the particles you leave behind when you get up each morning can be found on unwashed bedding. Pet dander and hair contributes to what you’re breathing in, too. As these particles remain in your bed, they pollute the air you breathe at night.

How can you combat this potential source of pollution? One of the most important steps you can take is to wash your bedding regularly. This includes your sheets, pillowcases, and all blankets. If you don’t already, we recommend washing your comforter four times per year. bedding to In the Bag Cleaners and we’ll do the work for you. For $17, we’ll expertly clean your comforter. Our staff is experienced with the range of materials used in bedding, from synthetic to down comforters, and we will treat your favorite blanket with care. When you think about it, $68 per year is a pretty small price to pay for the knowledge that you’ll breathe easy and sleep soundly, isn’t it? Start with this simple change to improve your air quality. As Arianna suggests, “Make sleep something that’s welcoming.” You don’t need to give it any extra time — just leave the washing to us. Luckily, that doesn’t have to mean extra work for you. Bring your

Spring is here, which means flora will soon be in full bloom. Flowers can be an easy pick-me-up or a great way to add color to your home, but some people take their flower obsession to the next level by planning botanical-themed vacations. Here are some of the most impressive gardens and flower displays in the world. NETHERLANDS Holland, most famous for its tulips, always draws visitors at the first sign of spring. One of its most famous destinations, Keukenhof, located in Lisse, is among the world’s largest flower gardens. The park is 79 acres and boasts approximately 7 million flowers each year. This colorful garden is open annually from mid- March to mid-May, but mid-April is the ideal time to see the tulips. WASHINGTON, D.C. Besides the monuments and historic buildings, one of the biggest attractions in Washington, D.C. is the cherry tree blossoms. Travelers who visit the Tidal Basin during the spring can witness 3,000 trees, which were a gift from Tokyo in 1912, flaunt their beautiful pink blossoms. The best time to see the spectacle is from the end of March through the end of April.

Next time you’re planning a spring trip, consider visiting one of the world’s most beautiful flower displays. No green thumb required.
