The kind where you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing, you’re running on very little sleep, and somehow you’re expected to keep another human being alive. No pressure, right? I remember preparing for my first baby. The nursery had to be per- fect, the clothes were organized, and I had all the baby gadgets I was convinced I couldn’t live without. I read the books and thought I knew what motherhood would look like. Looking back, I have to laugh. I had no clue. Now, here I am with an 18-year-old daughter in college and twin 13-year-old boys who are practically taller than me. Somewhere between diapers, daycare, school projects, and sports practices, those tiny babies grew up. How did that happen so quickly? If I could go back, I’d tell myself to stop worrying about getting everything right. The baby doesn’t care if the nursery looks like a magazine. The laundry can wait. And nobody will remember whether you made homemade baby food or bought it in a jar. I’d also tell myself to take more pictures with the babies instead of always being behind the camera. Even with messy hair, tired eyes, and the outfit you’ve worn for two days. Those will be the pictures you wish you had more of. Here’s something nobody prepares you for: The worrying never stops. It just changes. You go from checking whether they’re breathing in the crib to waiting for a text that they’ve made it home safely. These days, my boys still want me to tuck them in at night, and you better believe I do. My daughter may be busy with college, work, and friends, but I still love hearing about her day. They don’t need me the same way, but they still need their mama. So, give yourself some grace. You’ll make mistakes, question yourself, and have days when you desperately need a shower, a nap, or five minutes alone. And that’s okay. Motherhood isn’t about getting every moment right. It’s about showing up, loving them through every stage, and learning as you go. Trust me, even 18 years later, I’m still learning.
