Maryland Awarded Funding to Upgrade Regional Bus Systems
By Luke Huddon, KFH Group
T his past August, U.S. Senators and Congressmen from Maryland announced that approximately $42M ($41,765,975) in federal funds has been awarded to support regional bus systems and prompt upgrades that adhere to the state’s adoption of new fuel efficiency standards. The grant awardees include Prince George’s County Government, Montgomery County Department of Transportation, and Anne Arundel County, through the Maryland Transit Administration. This funding comes from the Federal Transit Administration’s Buses and Facilities Program and the Low or No Emissions Program . The federal resources allow regional bus systems across the county to replace, rehabilitate, and purchase new buses and construct bus-related facilities. The goal, in this case, is to help transit agencies shift toward more environmentally friendly technologies that could allow harmful emissions to be cut in half by 2030 .
As for Maryland, $25 million (with an additional $6.25 million local match ) was awarded to Prince George’s County Government to purchase 20 zero-emission, battery electric buses. This funding will also be used to upgrade the transit depot and add electric chargers at transit hubs across the county.
