everything he did was meant to benefit the community he loved. “There are three reasons I do what I do,” said Arber during a past interview. “One: it needs to be done, in my own very humble opinion. Two: what we do always has the name of Vankleek Hill attached to it in an effort to promote the village as a go-to destination.Three: I try andmake what other people refer to as a living.” A civil engineer by profession, Arber came fromStoneyMountain, Manitoba. He bought a farm in the Vankleek Hill area in 1973 with the goal of being part of the organic farming

Champlain Township has lost one of its biggest fans. Phil Arber passed away December 14. Arber was well known as the owner of Arber Gallery and of Excellent Events, a company dedicated to providing opportunities for residents to come together and celebrate. Over the years he was involved in many longstanding and favourite local celebrations like the Festival of Flavours, the Christmas Craft Fair, and others. Almost

movement. But he is best remembered as owner of the Arbor Gallery Cultural Center, his involvement in the Higginson Tower renovation project, and for his part in various community beautification and cultural efforts like the Vankleek Hill murals and all the festivals that fill the community calendar. “I wear six or eight hats,” he explained. “I never get bored. All the things I do are unique and uniquely separate and different.” Arber was always first to credit others for their work on every community project. He believed many did not get the recognition they deserved. “There are an awful lot of people that help in the community, people whose stories should be toldmore thanmine. They go way

over and above what they are really supposed to do. People do a lot for the community without recognition. They deserve thanks.” “Most of our residents, within the municipality at least, knew Mr. Arber as he worked on many community projects in addition to running his company, a hobby farm and an antiques business,” stated mayor Gary Barton. “A fixture in our community since the 1970s, I amconvinced that people will remember him as a mover and a shaker, one who would get things done as per his vision of events, for having a direct personality, but above all else, for his sense of community. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and associates. He will be remembered for a long time.”
