want to bs taken up and not down.” “You gave me the ‘down’ signal.” “Please pardon me; I must have made a mistake. Please take me up out of this dark place as quickly as possible,” I answered. The downward way always leads us into darkness sooner or later. Remember, boys and girls, that the course of the world is always downward and away from God. The secret of the victorious, upward-moving life lies in letting the Lord Jesus Christ be your Saviour from sin, letting Him change the course of your life from the downward to the up ward trend. GOING UP OR DOWN B y R obert L. E vans

S TANDING on the third floor of a large building the other day waiting for the elevator, a gen asked me, as I too stood waiting, “Are you going up or down?” I answered, “Going up,” so he pushed the button by the side of the elevator labeled “Up.” When the elevator came, we both stepped in and were taken up to the top floor of the building. May I ask you boys and girls the same question that the gentleman put to me, “Are you going up or down?” You may be surprised and perhaps want to answer me by saying, “We are neither going up nor down." Oh! but every one of you is either going up or moving downward! By this I mean that as you choose between a right and a wrong act, or between the truth and a lie, your life is going upward or downward. Let us imagine some examples. I overhear the conversation of two young men on a certain street cor ner. They indulge in vulgar talk, and I hear them take the name of God in vain. What do you think? Are they going up or down? You will agree with me that they are on the down grade. I step into a restaurant for lunch, and I note at the next table two fine-looking young women, but they are smok ing cigarettes. They think of course that they are progressive girls, keeping abreast of the times; but you will agree with me that al though they are traveling with the popular crowd, they are not going up. When I hear of a young girl's refusing to go on a pleasure trip on the Lord’s day that she might attend her Sunday-school class-, I register the fact that there is a girl who is moving up.

had been finding people who are not. concerned with whether they are going up or down in the moral scale as long as they are having a good time and have a good living. But the direction we are going does make a difference! Boys and girls, we do well if we con sider every step that we are about to take in life in the light of, “Will this take me up or down?” Let us always decide to take the upward path! Many a hasty choice by a young person has started that life on the downward road. I entered a great skyscraper in Chi cago once on the ground floor, walked up to the elevator shaft and thought lessly pushed the “down” button. The elevator came, I stepped in, and down we went to the third basement where there was little light. With some im patience I said to the elevator man, “I

I asked a stranger, an elevator operator, which 'he preferred—to go up or to come down. He an swered, “It makes no difference to me whether I am going up or coming down, as long as I get my pay.” I said, “Thank you, your answer reminds me that you are not un like a great many people.” “What do you mean?” he asked. I told him that on every hand I
