AUGUST 31, 1941 JOHN URGES CHRISTIAN LOVE T he E pistles of J ohn

GOLDEN TEXT : «Let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth” (1 John 3:18). DEVOTIONAL. READING: Heb. 13:1-8. Outline and Exposition I. R evealing L ove (3:13-18) T HERE IS nothing surprising in and it is this against which the world’s hatred is aimed. The world has bowed readily enough to many so-called great leaders, but the. Christ of Scripture is still the object of the world’s hatred (cf. John 15:25), for He alone is the God-Man. The supreme manifestation of this hatred is seen at Calvary. On the other hand, the one in whom Christ dwells will love the brethren, that is, those who are bom of God (v. 14). The love that rises in the heart of the Christian toward all other Chris tians is proof that the new birth has taken place in the individual, and that a new life has been entered. This is the same kind of love that took our Lord to the cross (cf. Eph. 5:25-28). The one who truly loves will extend his compassion to his needy brother wherever he may be found. If he does not do this, it may well be asked: “How dwelleth the love of God in him?” (v. 17). There can be but one answer: The love of God is foreign to the one who closes his heart to the appeal of the needy brother. II. E xpressing L ove (4:7-14) The teaching is that God is love, hence love is of God. True love is found only In Him (vs. 7, 8). The world may possess., sentiment or affection, but of true love it knows nothing experimentally, be cause it knows not God who is love. The life received by the Christian through faith in Jesus Christ both com pels and enables the believer to love with truth and righteousness. Furthermore, God who is love must reveal Himself (vs. 9,10). The revela tion ‘is seen in God’s sending His Son “to be the propitiation for our sins.” . Because we were dead, He must provide life; because we were guilty, He must provide propitiation, and He does both by and through His Son. The test of whether o»e is bom of God or not follows (vs. 11-14). “If God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.” The “ought” is used in the

1 John 3:13—Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate yon. 14 W e know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death. 15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him. 16 Hereby perceive we the love or God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. , „ _ IT Bnt whoso hath this world s good, jnd seeth his brother hove need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God lni8*llMT little children, let us not love In word, neither in tongue» but In deed and In truth. 4*7 Beloved, let us love one another* for love is of God* and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. 8 He that loveth not, knoweth not God* for God Is love. 9 In this was manifested the love of God toward us, beeause that God sent his only begotten Son Into the world, that we might live through him. 10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. _ , 14 And we have seen and do testily that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world. 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God rdwelleth in him, and he in God. 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. 17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world. 18 There is no fear in love; but per fect love casteth out fear: beeause fear hath torment. He that feareth Is not made perfect in love. 10 W e love him, because he first loved u s. 20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also.
