God does not always deliver His chil dren from trouble, but He does deliver them from the despair and the evil of trouble. Often He sanctifies a life through trial, all the while protecting that one in “the secret of his taber nacle.” Of this, Adam Clark has said, “Were there no other place, He would put me in the holy of holies, so that an enemy would not dare to approach me.” God not only hides His own in safe places, but He also insures them of deliverance and reward before the bat tle is even begun. No one can be drowned as long as his head remains above water. Neither can the Chris tian be defeated when his head is “lifted up” above his enemie's. Shame and fear cause one’s head to hang. Faith and hope and confidence cause one’s head to be held high. Joy and praise fill the hearts and lips of those who thus live triumphantly. For the Leader If this meeting ca’n be held around an open campfire, it may be made very impressive by having the individual members of your group voluntarily place a twig on the fire as they voice their desire to live a triumphant life in Him, or as they quote a verse of Scripture which will establish courage in their hearts.
peace (Isa. 26:3). Likewise a knowledge of God and thè experiencing of victory bring peace to Christians today. IV. HIS GREAT AMBITION (v. 4). The Psalmist’s one great ambition, which was the sum of all his desires, was continual communion and fellow ship with God. It would not have been enough for him to have gone in and out of His presence as an occasional visitor" who enters a friend’s home. He desired to dwell every moment of his life in the most intimate friendship with God. The reason for this desire was that he might “behold the beauty of the Lord” and inquire into the things of the Lord. Worldly beauty fades quickly, but the beauty of the Lord will con tinue to inspire with awe and enrich all those who behold it throughout all eter nity. And who cart fathom the riches which He has for us, even though we “inquire in his temple” all the days of our lives? Such a high and holy am bition as this belongs to the triumphant Christian. He has one sole ambition. As Mary of Bethany (Lk. 10:42), he chooses the one thing which is needful,' the sweet, continuous presence and fel lowship of his Lord. True communion does not exclude practical service for others for Christ’s sake; it makes it possible. V. HIS ULTIMATE VICTORY (vs. 5, 6). ■experienced that light as a personal reality in his life, so that he can say, “The Lord is my light and my salva tion.” And though he himself is weak, yet he has unflinching courage because his “life is hid with Christ in God” (Col. 3:3), and God’s declaration is that His “strength is made perfect in weak ness” (2 Cor. 12:9). “The Lord is my strength” ! II, HIS PAST POES (v. 2). David found his enemies to be the wicked—not the children of God. His enemies are characterized by their malice. They came upon him as cruel men, “to eat up my flesh,” yet “they stumbled and fell.” -The Christian to day who would be triumphant will have enemies. The wicked hate the godly. Since the first disobedience of Adam in the garden, there has been an enmity between the seed of the woman and the serpent (Gen. 3:15). Yet David’s testimony from experience was that his foes always came to ultimate ruin. III. HIS PRESENT PEACE (v. 3). David was not of'himself courageous. Yet knowing God as his light and sal vation and strength, and having expe rienced God’s powter and assistance in subduing his enemies, David found his faith enlarged so that there was no fear in him. His heart was in perfect AFTER THEIR OWN PLEASURE By Edith S. Pedersen This is a story for young people that shows the difference between being a Christian and being just a church member.
