Finally, an overview of issues presented to pastors and perspec­ tives on ministry to people struggling with these issues. Required of M.Div. and MA students, except TAPH, TMIR PT 708 Advanced Pastoral Counseling (3) Focused on developing counseling skills needed beyond relationships to assist helpees to deal with physical, relational, spiritual, emotional and moral reality. Secondly, focused on developing skills needed to assist helpees to take respon­ sibility for their own lives and grow on to ministry. Finally, overview of theoret­ ical approaches to counseling. Prereq­ uisite: PT 707. Required of M.Div. and MA (P.C.G.) students. PT 711 Advanced Sermon Preparation (2) A skill-refinement practicum in the essentials of expository preaching, including evaluation of off-campus pul­ pit ministry. Prerequisites: PT 609, 610. Elective. PT 715 Principles and Ethics of Communication (2) An explanation of the principles of communication and how they effect learning and change. An examina­ tion of the ethical issues of persuasion such as emotional appeals , us e of guilt, fear and personalities. Elective. PT 717-718 Research Seminar (1-2) In-0epth investigation of a topic under the guidance of the Christian Ministry and Leadership department using stan­ dard research procedures. Topic selection and course enrollment is by department approval. Elective. PT 721 Pastoral Skill Development (2) Combining of classroom experience with field trips to jails, prisons, hospi­ tals, sanitariums and various self-help groups. Exposure to the problems of humanity and specialists who work with those problems. Prerequisite: PT 602. Elective. PT 722 Small Group Discipleship (3) An examination of the role of small groups in the local church for develop­ ing biblical community. PT 703 The Church and Society (3) A study of biblical ethics and the role the local church plays in the commu­ nity. Special attention will be given to major social problems such as sanctity of life, chemical abuse, domestic violence, social ills , and the political process. Required of M.A. P.C.C., all M.Div. except mission and urban ministries. PT 706 Personal Foundations of Ministry (2) Focused on the importance of self­ understanding for spiritual and emo­ tional well-being as well as effective ministry to hurting people, an investiga­ tion of the impact of personal and fam­ ily history on theological outlook, emo­ tional congruence, relational attrac­ tions and moral decisions. The class will seek to develop the skills of per­ sonal evangelism, determine strategies for a discipleship ministry, and explore the theory and practice of small group ministries . Required of M.Div., and MA (B/ T.S. emphasis) students. PT 591 Introduction to Field Education (1) Introduction into the practical elements of ministry.
