PsydwlogJ': Ph.D. students must com- plete a minimum of 86 semesters hours in psychology in addition to a doctoral dissertation . These 86 units include at least 12 units selected from SLB elective psychotherapy courses, and 12 units of practicum (which must be taken in resi- dence). Students may apply up to six units of graduate coursework from the School of Intercultural Studies toward the total psychology hours requirement. Theowgy: Al l students must complete a minor in theology wh ich includes a minimum of 17 semester units. Master's Research: Ph.D. students must complete a year-long M.A. level research project (SPY 600) involving literature revi ew, problem conceptual- ization, data gathering and analysis, and report writing. Integration SeminmJ: All students par- ticipate in a series of seminars (14 units) devoted to the integration of a variety of theological and psychological concepts in research , theory and practice. Dissertation Research: 16 units of dissertation research are required

This proficiency exam is taken at the end of the first semester of the doctoral research seminar. Psy.D. students must either register fo r five units of credit for dissertation proposal or for the doctoral research seminar. (9) Fino! Oral Examination The final examination is an oral defense of the dissertation before the doctoral committee and other im~ted professionals. Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology 1) Residence and Coursework 01mally, fom years of residency are required unl ess transfer of credit is bought in and advanced standing granted. While the doctorate is not awarded simply for completion of stated course work, there are basic unit require- men ts for the degree (133 semester hours). Each student is assigned a fac- ulty advisor who assists in the planning of each semester's schedule of courses and supemses the student's progress in the program. Al l students are required to com- plete a one-year, full-time clinical intern- ship prior to graduation. All internships are to be approved in advance by the Clin ical Training Committee. For fur- ther details, refer to the Internship Guidelines in student handbook. Intern- ship fees are listed in the psychology course section (STN 731 Internship). (7) Completion of Training Therapy All students must receive certifica- tion of completion of training therapy from the director of clinical training. Aminimum of 50 hours of group ther- apy plus 50 hours of individual therapy is required. See Training Therapy Guidelines for further details. (8) Dissertation OR Research Consumership Sequence All Psy.D. students must demon- strate doctoral-leve l mastery of a research area in cl inical psychology. This may be done either by a disserta· tion or by a research consumersh ip sequence. The research consumership sequence is composed of: (a) a two semester, five credit doctoral research seminar focusing on the Ciitical evalua- tion and utilization of clinical research; (b) a paper involving a critical review of

These examinations are given two times annually and serve as the major means of evaluating a student's suitabil- ity to continue studies toward the doc- torate. The examinations may be taken any time after completion of 75%of the course work and must be taken prior to the Professional Qualifying Exam. Only one retake of the examina- tion is allowed. The dates of the Com- prehensive Examinations are specified in the Academic Calendar.
