H ow D o Y ou W ant to B e R emembered ?

We all share one common attribute as humans. We are all going to die one day. It doesn’t matter what social status we are; we will all meet this fate. The thought is jarring, but it sure makes me think. Isn’t it a call to each of us to wake up every morning and let each member of our family know we love them? Doesn’t this fact move us to live every day in a meaningful way as if it were our last? Does this fact make us want to engage in work that makes a difference in the lives of others? This fact makes us consider the big question. How do we want to be remembered? When I see the lives of the larger-than-life people in my life who have passed away (my parents, my grandparents, uncles, aunts, my godmother Mrs. Kelsey, my friends Tom Richardt and Tom McGrath, and my law school mentor Charles Rice, to name a few), they all shared strikingly similar qualities. They all had rock solid faith. More than that, they bravely put their faith into daily action. One of the unique features of their daily service to others was that it was mostly behind the scenes. Other than the persons being served, no one else knew of the great care, love, and inspiration they were providing. Each of these folks knew their mission in life was to love God with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength. As a byproduct, they served their families, friends, and communities with everything they had. For each of them, their service to others became a daily, indelible habit. They didn’t sit on the sidelines and wait for someone to seek help. They sought out folks who needed help and helped them in concrete, meaningful ways. They forgave their adversaries repeatedly and, in fact, prayed for them by name. I want to be like these giants.

son Solomon were “Be a Man.” Fr. Larry Richards of Erie, Pennsylvania, took these words and wrote a book I re-read every year to help me focus on the important things in life. I encourage everyone, men and women, to read this book. “Be a Man” challenges us to think about how we want to be remembered by our families and friends when we pass away. Want a copy? Two years ago, I met John for the first time. John owns and operates one of the best veterans’ disability law firms in the country. In Episode 13 of my podcast, “The Opening Statement,” I interviewed John. (Listen to it on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or YouTube if you want to hear John’s story.) At the Berry Law Firm, John and his team have delivered justice for thousands of veterans who are seeking disability compensation for injuries they sustained during their service. Let me tell you one thing about John: He is a warrior. John served more than 20 years in the United States Army and the Nebraska National Guard. During his service, he led successful teams in fights on battlefields in Bosnia and Iraq. He retired as a battalion commander and was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the 209th Regimental Training Institute for his service.

In 2003, John joined the Berry Law Firm to fight for and empower disabled veterans nationwide. As a veteran himself, John has intimate knowledge of the Veterans Affairs system. As an attorney, John never accepts defeat in the courtroom and fights relentlessly for his clients. He’s gained several awards for his success as a trial attorney and has spoken publicly about PTSD among veterans. If you know a disabled veteran who’s having trouble getting the compensation they deserve, John Berry and the Berry Law Firm can fight for them. You can contact John at (888) 466-9215. HHS SIRVA RULE CHANGE DELAYED UNTIL APRIL 2021

it to say, we are very strongly opposed to this rule change, and we were disappointed it was pushed through in January.

That date has now changed. HHS has extended the filing date for SIRVA claims to April 23, 2021. This is a great outcome for anyone who has suffered a shoulder injury after receiving a vaccine and hasn’t yet contacted a vaccine injury attorney. This delay will allow them an extra two months to get a petition on file and preserve a SIRVA “table case.” Assuming their case meets the criteria set forth in the Vaccine Injury Table, they will be afforded a presumption that the vaccine caused their SIRVA injury.

We remain hopeful that HHS will find a reason to stop the SIRVA rule change from becoming effective altogether.

On Jan. 21, 2021, the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) proposed rule was published in the Federal Register to remove SIRVA (Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration) from the Vaccine Injury Table. This rule change was scheduled to become effective on Feb. 22, 2021. In past newsletters, I’ve covered what the rule change means and how it would impact people petitioning for compensation after a SIRVA injury. Suffice

We will know more in the coming months and will continue to keep you updated as we learn more. If you have any questions about SIRVA or this rule change, email me at JSvitak@ShannonLawGroup.com.

HOW TO GET YOUR CAR REPAIRED AFTER AN ACCIDENT IN ILLINOIS

No matter how serious or minor they are, car accidents cause stress. You didn’t expect to get in a wreck, and the accident wasn’t your fault. Now, you have to figure out how to get your vehicle back on the road as soon as possible.

Under this coverage, your insurance will pay for a rental car for a specific number of days if you’re in an accident. For example, your policy may cover up to 30 days of using a rental car.

What If My Vehicle Was Deemed A ‘Total Loss’?

Don’t worry — we’ve got you covered. In this article, we’ll guide you through how to get your car repaired after an accident in Illinois.

If your car was deemed a “total loss,” that means it will cost more to fix the vehicle than what it’s actually worth. As such, your insurance company will offer to pay you for the current market value of your vehicle.

1. Contact your insurance company and file a claim. Here’s a tip: You can select which insurance company you want to file a claim under if you are not at fault for the accident. You pay auto insurance premiums every month to cover crashes like this, so you should use it. Typically, your vehicle will be repaired faster if you go through your own insurance. 2. Select an auto body shop in your area. Work with your insurance company to select a highly trusted repair shop in your area and approved by your insurer. You don’t have to pick the first mechanic they recommend. 3. Transport your vehicle to the repair shop. After picking an auto body shop, work with your insurance company to transport your vehicle there. 4. Take advantage of your rental car policy. While your car is in the shop, speak with your insurance company and ask to use your car rental coverage if you have it.
