When questioned, rider explained that he was instructed to ride the gelding neutral from the barrier and not to go forward but to seek cover. After beginning well he attempted to find cover passing the winning post which was made difficult due to Rolls racing keenly. Near the 2000m he obtained cover but soon after lost this position due to Mimi’s Award shifting out to taking that position. He added he settled further back than anticipated. Passing the 600m, was unable to keep the back of Mimi’s Award as his mount can hang in when placed under pressure FLEM 01/07/2023 Caught wide until restraining to find cover near the 1000m. Prior to the start being affected, turned its head to the side and as a result was slow to begin. Tactics queried. RR after being slow to begin his mount settled further back than intended and that he had been instructed the gelding has a short sprint and for this reason, he did not place it under real pressure under straightening near the 300m. Trainer confirmed instructions, but added he didnt anticipate being as far back in the field when issuing them.
