legacy LESTER’S ENDURING
By Celia Purdey
In a tribute to the late Deane Lester, whose visionary idea sparked the revival of an iconic race, The Flemington Cup has been renamed the Deane Lester Flemington Cup, forever immortalising his name and passion for the sport. Growing up on his parents’ thoroughbred studs on the Mornington Peninsula and in the Dandenong Ranges, Deane Lester’s love for horses and racing was nurtured from an early age. Despite being born with spina bifida, he refused to let anything dampen his passion for the sport. As Lester grew older, his knowledge of horse racing developed, and his expertise in understanding the form of racehorses became widely respected. His dedication and astuteness earned him a reputation as one of the most respected form students in the Australian racing community. He spent countless hours analysing race data, studying pedigrees, and observing horses on the track, all in pursuit of uncovering the secrets of success. Lester’s knowledge and curiosity about the sport led him to the discovery of “The Flemington Cup”. The cup, now in the National Gallery of Victoria,
8
DEANE LESTER had a special place in racing history as the oldest surviving trophy awarded in Victoria. It had been presented to the winner of a horse race held in 1849, 12 years before the first Melbourne Cup. The race for The Flemington Cup had not actually taken place at Flemington Racecourse, as the inscription suggested. Instead, it had been run on a course located two kilometres away, near the Flemington Inn. These races were popular pub events held in the pioneering days of Australia. The local publican, James Dunbar, a proud Scottish man, had organised the race as a way to celebrate a traditional Scottish holiday, ‘Auld Hansel’s Monday’. The event attracted enthusiastic spectators and created a vibrant atmosphere around the inn, with lesser races offering prizes of saddles and riding whips. Lester believed that the history and significance of The Flemington Cup deserved recognition, so he approached the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) with an idea. He proposed a race that would honour The Flemington Cup and celebrate the enduring spirit and roots of Australian racing. The VRC shared Lester’s vision and readily embraced the concept. In 2020, as part of the club’s celebrations of 180 years of racing, the VRC introduced the reimagined Flemington Cup into the race program. It appeared alongside the Byerley Handicap, its revival bringing a sense of nostalgia. In 2023, the race has been renamed the Deane Lester Flemington Cup. It serves not only as a reminder of the rich history of Australian racing but also of the legacy left by Lester, who passed away in February after a short battle with cancer. His passing left a profound void in the racing community. Lester’s contribution and vision for honouring the past will now forever be remembered. His name will be etched alongside trainers and jockeys as a true legend of Australian racing, woven into the fabric of the sport he loved so dearly.

Robert Cram HAPPY RETIREMENT
Racing Victoria (RV) Chairman of Stewards, Robert Cram, has announced his retirement, bringing an end to his stewarding duties at the conclusion of the racing season on July 31, 2023. After four decades dedicated to upholding the integrity of racing, Cram’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable career within the industry. Robert Cram began his journey as a Cadet Stipendiary Steward with the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) in 1982, and for the past 41 years, he has served as an integrity official in Victorian racing. Over the years, he held various roles, including Chairman of Stewards in the South Western, Ballarat District, and Northern District regions of Victoria. Additionally, from 1991 to 1996, Cram served as the director of the state’s apprentice jockey training program. Having been promoted to Senior Stipendiary Steward in 1996, Cram later assumed the position of Deputy Chairman of Stewards – Non Raceday Integrity & Compliance, appointed by RV in 2005. In 2008, he briefly held the role of Manager – Integrity Services for two years before returning to the position of Deputy Chairman of Stewards in 2010. Following Terry Bailey’s departure to Singapore, Cram was appointed Chairman of Stewards in 2018 and has since played a vital role in the industry.
10
ROBERT CRAM Born into a racing family in country Victoria, Cram has demonstrated unwavering dedication to the sport throughout his life. Reflecting on his career, he shared, “My family has been involved in racing for generations – my father was a part-time trainer, and I have always been drawn to working with horses. I hold great respect for the thoroughbred horse and have been fortunate to never feel reluctant to go to work.” A significant aspect of Cram’s tenure as Chairman of Stewards was overseeing the smooth running of the Melbourne Cup Carnival while upholding the rules and regulations. He expressed immense pride in this role and previously highlighted its significance. “While my role is the same all year round, during the Carnival the profile of what I do is higher. It brings more pressure to the job because the audience is multiplied. My job, with my team, is to implement the rules of racing and to ensure that racing is conducted safely and fairly and that everyone gets their chance. But during the Cup Carnival everything at Flemington is magnified – the audience, the wagering, the media coverage and the prizemoney.” Cram always relied on his experience and the confidence he had in his panel of stewards to navigate through this demanding period. With a vast team of officials, including veterinary staff, barrier staff, the judge, clerk of scales, steward panels, and clerks of the course, they always worked together harmoniously to present racing in the best possible manner. Robert Cram’s retirement marks the end of an illustrious career dedicated to upholding the integrity of racing and ensuring the success of prestigious events like the Melbourne Cup Carnival. We thank him for his service and wish him all the best.

Paris Wilkinson’s great-grandmother, grandmother and mother loved riding horses and have passed on their passion to the talented young showjumper. VRC Member Paris Wilkinson still remembers the excitement she felt sitting in the back seat of her parents’ car as they made the long Friday night drive from Melbourne to the family farm in Gippsland. There, six-year-old Wilkinson and her younger sister were reunited with their feisty Welsh show pony, Jewel, and Wilkinson happily spent the weekend riding him around the paddock and attending pony club events. “Every weekend and school holiday we’d go to the farm and there are photos of me at only two or three sitting on the back of the big Clydesdales that my grandmother owned. Then I got Jewel who was beautiful – but a terror!” said Wilkinson, 23. By Sarah Marinos horse lovers A FAMILY OF

HORSE LOVERS “Because he was a pony, we thought that he’d plod along and be easy to manage, but I’d go into the paddock with him and he’d just take off. I’d hold on as tight as I could with a monkey grip and just let him run. “My great-grandmother, Isabelle, started riding at the age of 50 and rode until her late 80s, my grandmother, Barbara, only recently stopped riding at the age of 77, and my mum, Renae, also has horses. They couldn’t afford to have horses and to ride until they were older, so Mum wanted my sister and I to enjoy that world from when we were very young. “But right from the start Mum taught us to be responsible and even some days when we were tired, she reminded us that our pony was relying on us and that he needed to be fed and cared for every day.” While her sister stopped riding while still at school, Wilkinson maintained the family tradition. She juggled high school studies and an arts degree at the University of Melbourne with riding and competing. Wilkinson graduated from university last year and majored in history, media and communications. She now works part-time organising social media campaigns and events for small businesses but hopes to eventually use her social media skills in the equestrian field. She balances her working life with her commitment to her horses and six days a week, early in the morning, she drives an hour from her home in bayside Melbourne to take care of her horses on the Mornington Peninsula. Wilkinson is a keen showjumper and competes with her Off The Track thoroughbred, Konquest K. “My first OTT thoroughbred was Sunday Smile and I got him when I was 15 through pony club. He had a love heart on his head – a massive incentive for me to buy him!” she laughed. “I’d been warned that OTT horses could be hot-headed and that you had to be a more experienced rider to manage them but Sunday Smile had a lovely calm disposition. He was a great confidence booster for me and I had him for five or six years before we sold him on as a trail riding pleasure horse. “I don’t think OTT horses are any different. They’re athletic and they like being given a job to do – you just need to discover what they enjoy doing.” Wilkinson acquired Konquest K in December 2021. Bred in WA, he was exported to Hong Kong in 2014 but never raced – Wilkinson believes he probably wasn’t suited to the warm and humid climate in Hong Kong. He then arrived back in Melbourne via New Zealand. Wilkinson found him through Spring Creek Equine in Coldstream. “I was looking for a showjumper and he was the first horse I looked at. A week later he was home with me,” she said. “At that point, he’d just done eventing and he was flat and fast but he was brave and that’s what I look for in my showjumpers. You can build the technique but they need to be brave. He’s competitive, he will jump anything and he gives 110 per cent.”
13

Wilkinson also has a second showjumper, Showgirl SL, a warmblood- Clydesdale cross. “I bought her because of my grandmother’s obsessions with Clydesdales – my grandmother loves seeing me ride her!” said Wilkinson . While Wilkinson comes from a long line of horse-loving women, she’s the first in the family to compete. In November, she competed at the Australian Jumping Championships at Boneo Park with Konquest K and came eighth in the Racing Victoria Off The Track Championship event. Konquest K was also crowned OTT Champion at the World Wetlands Day Jumping Championships in January 2023. “Most months he comes home with a ribbon,” said Wilkinson. When she isn’t showjumping, Wilkinson still enjoys being around horses and joined the VRC in 2018. “The social aspect of racing is important for me and I enjoy the events for young members. I’ve made a lot of friends through those events,” she said. “Horses will always be part of my life and I’d love to continue working with OTT horses, to help them transition from the track to a happy, healthy life off the track.”
