Firefighters take “polar bear plunge” for winter training exercise gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Rockland rescue boat drill or going into the water themselves.

The indoor swimming pool facility at the Rockland YMCA-YWCA has been a benefit for the fire department. Now fire fighters can practise and test for their swimming ability year-round at home and not have to go out-of-town to another mu- nicipal pool facility. So far thiswinter theClarence-Rockland Fire Department has had one ice water rescue call and it was in January. Chayer noted that it turned out to be a false alarm but he added that the fire department is concerned that the milder-than-usual winter weather this season and the alternating warm spells, rainy days, and cold spells, may have created some potential treacherous ice conditions along some parts of local rivers and streams and lakes. “It’s really hard to figure ice condi- tions,” Chayer said. Ice fishers, snowmobilers and anyone else going out on the rivers and lakes for any reason are urged to be cautious about their travel routes. Check with the South Nation Conservation Authority for advice on how to gauge ice conditions. the steps of setting up their operation. Spaces for the Summer Company 2012 program are limited. Interested students should apply early through the online information and registration site at www.summercompany.ca. The PREC can also help with applications and offers bilingual service. The January weather may have been mild for winter but it still made for some chilly training conditions for Clarence- Rockland’s firefighters when they headed down to the Ottawa River for “polar bear dips” at Parc du Moulin as part of their training exercises in ice water rescue situations. “Therewasaperfectspotofopenwater,” said Chief Luc Chayer of Rockland Station 3. “It was really, really cold, maybe about 15 below with the wind.” The winter training exercise took place near the boat launch at the park during three separate sessions Jan. 21, 22, and 28. Every year members of the department have to re-certify for their open water and cold water rescue skills. The depart has just eight wet suits available so the 26 members have to stagger their training schedule, which is why the entire practice session took place over a three-day period. Participants tested their ability to spot a potential rescue situation, trying to assist a person in trouble by reaching for them either by stretching out flat on the ice, using a pole or tow rope, and finishing up with
