The Jockey Club South West Kalendar Magazine 2019-20

the international 13th – 14th December

sees horses tackle the famous cross country fences in the centre of the course (it’s the only one of its kind in Britain). This particular race marks the finale of the Crystal Cup series which runs across 10 racecourses throughout Europe, from Wroclaw in Poland to Lion D’Angers in France, the beautiful Merano in Italy and one of the world’s most famous races – the Velka Pardubicka in Pardubice, Czech Republic. The hotly contested series has seen the likes of Tiger Roll take on the fences at Cheltenham as his prep race before both his Randox Health Grand National wins at Aintree Racecourse. The 2018 finale was won by Jamie Snowdon-trained Fact Of The Matter who improved on his second place over these obstacles at The November Meeting under Gavin Sheehan. Jamie said: “You’ve got to get emotional about it. He has obviously improved on the back of his last run here. He jumped beautifully and Gavin got him into a beautiful rhythm. He cut every corner and dug deep and fought all the way to the line.” The 2018 series was won for a remarkable fifth consecutive year by French trainer Patrice Quinton. The Unibet International Hurdle Trial was won by the Nicky Henderson-trained Brain Power under Nico de Boinville. The eight-strong field featured local hero The

New One, trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies and ridden by his son, Sam. The 10-year-old has been no stranger to the Cheltenham Winners’ Enclosure over the years and he won this race in 2016. The 2018 race was his last appearance on the racecourse as the gelding was retired afterwards, and the local favourite received a well-received celebratory parade of honour. After the race, a tearful Nigel said of his ‘great mate’: “It’s very emotional, it was great to see him enjoy himself but Sam said, when push comes to shove, he doesn’t have it in him anymore. Where can I find another one like him? I really hoped he would come back today.”
