2021 Senior Lawrentian

OTHER CRICKET Boys’ cricket was as competitive as ever with tough fixtures and some great battles against some much larger schools. U12A XI captain Jenson Cutts scored a very good 84 runs against Norton Knatchball school in the Kent Cup. Many pupils across the 1st & Second Form were able to make starts with the bat, however never kicked on. The U14A & B XI had their first year of playing on a twenty two yard pitch and it took time for bowlers to adjust in their first few matches. Jack Foster scored a very good 46* and was supported well by Tadhg with 25* to secure a pleasing seven wicket win against King’s Canterbury. Even more satisfying was that we won all five matches in the block against King’s Canterbury! I think that we would have to go deep in the history books to see when that last happened, if it ever has. Olly Skelton scored an excellent 49* against Canterbury Academy in the Kent Cup and Raul Forsythe-Artiga had some excellent spells with the ball despite not always being rewarded with wickets. The U15A XI went on a good Kent Cup run before losing to overall winners, Tonbridge School, in the Quarter Final. The squad had some good wins against King’s Canterbury, Simon Langton GS and Kent College to mention a few. Charlie Bell, Ollie Jordan-Smith, Gabe Mitchell, TomO’Callaghan and Theo Rowe all gained 1st XI experience which will naturally help them next season when they step up to the Senior team. 

of the week. On the following day came the almighty challenge of playing Whitgift 1st XI! It is remarkable to think that a school of our size could even be in a position to play competitively against Whitgift, let alone that the result would go down to the last ball of the match. Nonetheless we won by five runs in an outstanding game of cricket! Duncan Moore scored a fine 63 and was supported well by George Kidd with 40 runs. With 12 runs needed, Thomas Izzard bowled an outstanding final over, only conceding 6 runs. It was an incredible effort from those who played and a really special moment to beat one of the best sports schools in the country. Following this momentous result, the squad faced Cranbrook School on the last day of Cricket Week and won by three wickets to finish the season off with an undefeated week. William Ansell (3-11) bowled with control and precision and took the early wickets that we wanted and George Kidd scored a well-earned 32 runs to help get us to their total. This was a feat that has only been achieved once before in the 2019 season. Ollie Jordan-Smith took a hat trick to claim the last three Cranbrook wickets and Upper Sixth leaver, and captain, Joe McCaffrey, fittingly hit the winning runs and finished with 21* to be clapped off the pitch for one last time. Despite a number of excellent performances throughout the season – including several half centuries scored by squad members throughout the season – just one Performance Cap was awarded to Joe McCaffrey for taking 5-19 against King’s Canterbury. However I am sure that more would have been awarded if five 1st XI matches had not been cancelled.
