PresidenTalks Unlocking Development Through Non-linear Career Pathing I love having conversations to hear about people’s career aspirations and personal goals. However, I’m often bothered when the conversation starts with me asking “What are your career goals?” and the response I receive is the title of a specific position, such as District Manager, Training Manager, etc. So, then I ask what is it about that position that excites them and why that position vs. any other.

Damian Hanft The common responses include more responsibility, leading a larger team, a higher salary, and so on. So, I flip the question and counter their response with, “So, if I gave you more responsibility, or had you lead a larger team, or increased your salary without changing the title, would you be satisfied?” And you can go on with “why” based questions to peel back the layers of the onion even further. I share this because so many of us are conditioned to think about career advancement in terms of a position title versus the attributes that we desire. We are fixated on this idea of linear career pathing, which is bad for both our organizations and employees. However, if we flip the paradigm and begin to encourage ourselves and employees to think in terms of non-linear career pathing, we can become more agile as organizations, while encouraging our employees to better align their personal interests with organizational needs. Once you can break through and shift to thinking about career growth in terms of

non-linear career pathing, or as preparing for positions that do not even yet exist, you can truly unlock development. Oftentimes, learners don’t fully know what is motivating them in career growth, which acts as a barrier for being able to create a development plan that will get them to their goal. We should be using a compass for careers, not a map.

Corban Nichols is our Charlotte Conference Director!

After a few years of “turtling,” Corban has busted out of his shell, and will now lead the Charlotte conference team! If you haven’t yet read his blog about “Giving More Than You Get,” here’s an excerpt of what he has to say about his CHART journey:

I was a theatre kid in my young years. Perhaps you’ve been exposed to the types. Bold, loud, afflicted with a terrible case of youngest child syndrome. Somehow, I was annoyed with every other theatre kid I came in contact with immediately. Call it a deep-seated insecurity that we’ll talk about in a future blog. Either way, being surrounded by others whom I immediately perceived as theatre kids terrified me. I did what anyone in my position would have done—I turtled… …When I did return, I was determined to give it a shot. I had to have been wrong before, and I was going to push all of the chips into the center of the table. All in. The first person I ran into was on the Conference Team and was running the Registration station. It was the same person I connected with 4 years before. Many of you already know him. His name is James Frank. I summoned up the internal resolve to say hello and reintroduce myself, but I didn’t get the chance. He came up, said hi, and remembered me right away. Cue the upbeat soundtrack — is this serendipity?! This had to be a sign. Since then, James has become a close, personal friend. I’ve ditched the turtle shell and have decided to sport a new attitude. I’ve volunteered in many different ways now for multiple conferences and for a Regional Training Forum. It’s been a blast… …In my case, I’ve had the opportunity to partner with James as a member of his conference team in Seattle, where he was the Conference Director. Now, I am thrilled to be able to partner together once again as I’ll be the Conference Director for CHART 105 in Charlotte, with James being a newly elected member of CHART’s Board of Directors! I don’t believe either of us could have imagined this being a possibility back in 2018…There is a Prism of Possibilities that lies ahead…

What makes a best place to work? Kelly McCutcheon moderated this panel of leaders to unlock those answers. In a nutshell, here's what each brand had to say: Figure out what makes YOU a best brand, and focus on what makes you uniquely you. - Kelly McCutcheon, Whataburger Be real and communicate with people.

Left to right: CHART President Damian Hanft of Inspire Brands thanks Jesse Boehm of Buffalo Wild Wings, Tammy Calhoun of Firebirds Wood Fired Grill, and Braxton Luzier of Swingers – The Crazy Golf Club for their years on the CHART Board

They may have just left the CHART Board, but their impact will live on! We celebrate their dedication and accomplishments: Jesse served for three years in the appointed role of Education Strategist, overseeing the Hospitality Training Competencies Certificate Program. Under his leadership, virtual workshops were added as a significant no-cost CHART member benefit. He also grew the Master Facilitator roster and updated the content of the program. Tammy served for four years, and helped grow membership during the pandemic through CHART’s free Membership Access Program. Her oversight of the Regional Training Forums (RTFs) helped secure RTF directors in all major areas of the US, and resulted in dozens of virtual and in-person RTFs across the country. Braxton served for two years, and directed the CHART Austin Hospitality Training Conference, which drew more than 200 training pros who gathered to share ideas through a hackathon and high-impact educational sessions. With his oversight, membership grew to more than 650 this past year; the highest in over a decade.

How did you get into the hospitality industry? I had a unique upbringing: I was raised in the hotel industry. My family and I lived in hotels most of my adolescence. Therefore, I was born into hospitality. I entered the food and beverage industry when I was 15. My first job was as a cashier at Carl’s Jr. I lived in Las Vegas at the time, so I quickly began working in the larger hotels and resorts (Treasure Island, Mirage, MGM Grand). I soon moved into the restaurant service industry where I was brought on by The Cheesecake Factory and stayed for almost 20 years. I shifted into more lifestyle brand restaurants in Los Angeles for a bit before taking on my current role with Levity Live. What has been the wildest moment of your training career so far? Wildest moment may have been when we were opening a new venue on New Year’s Eve. New market, new venue, new staff, and new management team. A snowstorm unexpectedly hit the area and so many training days had to be postponed. Due to the weather, there were delays with inspections and liquor deliveries which became quite the challenge. It suddenly became clear that we were not going to receive any liquor in the venue until opening night. Our new bartenders had set up the liquor room and all service bars the day of opening. They were unable to actually practice making any of our specialty cocktails until the first guest order was placed that night. They received over 400 tickets to the service well the first 30 minutes of their shift. The training team kicked into full support as these amazing bartenders dug in deep and barreled through each ticket as feverishly as possible. Wild indeed, but no one walked out, no one cried, every guest was taken care of, and they were all smiling with a sense of accomplishment at the end of the night. I watched a group of people, that were complete strangers just a week or two prior, become forever family that night. What is the most impactful thing you have learned about training? What I’ve learned over the years with training is that people learn in different ways and at different speeds. I’ve learned to be patient and constantly check in and ask questions. I always try to be real and honest with the trainee, then allow them the bandwidth to just relax and breathe. It’s just F&B, it’s always going to be okay if you put the guest first.
