TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN

Summer is off to a busy start. Both of my boys, Conner and Spencer, have been having a blast at camp. They’ve enjoyed spending time with friends, making new friends, and staying involved in a ton of activities. I’m glad they’re outside, keeping active, and getting plenty of fresh air. On the Fourth of July, our family got together to celebrate. But this year, the Fourth was a bit more special than usual. My little brother got married! He and his new wife had a small wedding in our parents’ backyard, then we capped of the events with fireworks. It was an amazing day, one I have no doubt my brother and his wife will remember for a long time (and on that note, my brother will have zero excuses for forgetting their anniversary!). A little later in July, my good friend Brandon Baltz and I had the opportunity to play in a golf tournament together. We’ve been buddies since the fourth grade when we were 10 years old. Now, 35 years later, we’re finally playing in a tournament together — and we won our flight to boot! Though this summer has been busy all around, at this point, I’m just glad the rain has finally let up. It’s good to see the floodwaters gone and things mostly back to normal. I know a few of our customers at the Truck Center had some trouble with the water — I hope it wasn’t too bad. A lot of landscapers in the area have been busy getting their clients’ properties cleaned up after all the damage. As for things here at the Truck Center, that classic saying “Time flies when you’re having fun” certainly applies. It feels like we sped right through the last few months. Not only did we have a fantastic second quarter, but we also made some major yearly goals ahead of schedule. Needless to say, we couldn’t be happier!

I know a lot of our customers couldn’t be happier as well. Over the past few months, Chevy and Isuzu have been offering some great incentives on their commercial vehicles. We can barely keep up. Right now, we’re eagerly anticipating an inventory restock for the third and fourth quarters. There are a ton of exciting vehicles on the horizon. Some of those vehicles are already starting to trickle in. For the 2018 model year, Chevy has introduced a number of new models and body styles. I’ve spent time with the new 2018 Equinox and 2018 Traverse, and they are beautiful, inside and out. These two are on the lot now, but in mid- to late August, you can expect to see the new Isuzu F-Series 25,950 GVW truck. Even better, you’ll be able to try out that new Isuzu. We’ll have one on hand for demos. The first 10 customers who reach out to us will have the chance to spend some one-on-one time with the truck. I’m talking about spending a couple of days with the truck, trying it out, and seeing how it fits in with the needs of your business. All you have to do is get in touch!

They can simply copy and paste the essay into Google Translate and let it read the essay aloud. Hearing their work ring out in Google’s monotone speech will help them highlight and fix those mistakes. Get Off Facebook Is your child wasting all of their precious studying hours on social media? Cash is king when it comes to the longevity of your business. Deadbeat clients can spell death for a budding company, and they do so more often than you would think. It may not sound like fun, but ironing out the wrinkles in your payment process can save you a massive headache down the road. Here are a few ways to make sure the cash comes in on time. The shorter and more concise your payment terms are, the better. For every client you work with, you need a signed contract in place, one that leaves zero room for confusion or misinterpretation. If you’re having cash-flow issues, consider shrinking the payment window. If a customer has 30 days to pay you, they’ll likely wait until the final week to send the check. It’s important that you’re reasonable with your payment terms, but keep in mind that most customers will wait until that last-minute deadline. Go digital. Most businesses work almost solely within the digital realm, and in order to maximize your payments, you must follow suit, no matter how much of a Luddite you may be. Digitizing your invoices saves your customers time. They won’t Are your kids already sweating exams this semester? Fear not! Combine these tips with a regular studying routine, and they’ll be set for anything their teachers assign this year. Chew On This Not all classrooms allow gum, but those that do offer students a distinct advantage. According to Scientific American, chewing gum increases the flow of oxygen to the areas of your brain responsible for attention and memory. Your student can even coordinate gum flavors with each of their classes. Do they have a biology test coming up? Encourage your student to chew peppermint gum while they study and while they take the test. Their brain will associate the minty flavor with those plant cell organelles they studied for an hour the night before. have to spend minutes in front of the scanner every time you send an invoice. Customers especially love paying their bills electronically. If you include an online option, you’ll make your customer happy. All the while, you won’t have to wait for checks in the mail, eliminating one more potential obstacle to payment. Send your invoices as quickly as you can. As Invoice2Go CEO Greg Waldorf writes, “When they invoice immediately, business pros get paid an average of seven days faster.” Don’t give customers a chance to forget they owe you. Sending an invoice when your work is still fresh in your customer’s mind can have dramatic results. According to Entrepreneur contributor John Rampton, sending out an invoice the day a job is completed makes you “almost 11/2 times more likely to get paid.” Reward customers who pay early. If you want your clients to pay ASAP, you can implement a system that takes a certain percentage off the bill when they pay within three days of receiving an invoice. Instead of cringing at their lost funds, customers will see that paying you quickly actually saves them money.

Alert: 2 Rogue Goats

GRILLED MEXICAN STREET CORN

Do They Make Handcuffs for Hooves?

Why would two goats be in the back of a police car? Did they wander onto private property? Get into a kick-fight at the local bar? Swallow a woman’s prized jewels? Nah. They were just lost. On a Sunday morning, Sergeant Fitzpatrick of the Belfast Police Department in Maine spotted Louis and Mowgli, two pygmy goats who were clearly lost. He shepherded them into the back of his squad vehicle and called it in: “I got two rogue goats here.” He wasn’t worried about the condition of the car. The back of that car had seen more hostile characters in its day. He posted a cute picture of them on Facebook with the caption, “Got goats? We do, and they do not belong to us … They are currently riding around with Sgt. Fitzpatrick, serenading him in goat music. Though he is thankful for the company on this cool Sunday morning, he would gladly return them to their owners. He is running out of vegetables to feed them.” Louis and Mowgli appear cool and collected in the photo. (Perhaps it wasn’t their first time in the back of the police car.) Luckily, their owner saw the post and quickly came to retrieve them. To announce their safe return, Fitzpatrick posted another cute selfie with his four-legged friends, saying, “The goats have been returned home. Louis and Mowgli enjoyed their day trip with Sgt. Fitzpatrick, but alas, all good things come to an end. Perhaps in the next budget year we can inquire as to getting some patrol goats.”

The Effects of Negative News

THEY SAY IGNORANCE IS BLISS … BUT IS IT HEALTHY?

Why Is the News So Negative?

It’s nearly impossible to log on to social media or turn on the TV without seeing something distressing. Instead of dwelling on what’s troubling, let’s focus on how to protect our mental health.

As news media revenue goes down and people become desensitized, news organizations feel the pressure to show emotionally relevant material such as crime and accidents. At a basic level, for something to be “newsworthy” — negative or not — it needs to be the exception to the rule, not the norm. That means watching the news might give you an inaccurate view of what daily life is like in the world.

The Psychology of Bad News

A study by Psychology Today found that people who watch negative news feel worse about pre-existing worries than people who watch happy or neutral events. That means people watching the news don’t just feel anxious about the world — they feel more anxious about their own lives. British psychologist Dr. Graham Davey, who specializes in the effects of media violence, says negative news can affect how you interact with the world around you. As you consume threatening news, you’re more likely to spot threats in your day-to-day activities that aren’t there, which leads to anxiety.

How to Fight the Negativity

It’s important to understand important issues of the day. But when the news becomes too much, psychologists encourage you to take a break with some good news — or no news at all. Advances in medicine and technology happen all the time! Seek out those stories, or take a break from news altogether. That’s when no news can become good news.
