SUVA PLANINA

ebrated geographer Jovan Cvijić, one of the greats of Serbian science, dubbed Suva Planina “the Alps of Southern Ser- bia”, due to the vertical rockfaces that extend along its northern flank, while fa- mous botanist Josif Pančić declared it “one of the most gigantic forms in our lands”. Its name relates to the fact that it is not rich in watercourses. Springs and rivers can only be found near the foot of the mountain, with only one other plen- tiful stream located in its higher areas, at an altitude of around 1,300 metres.

SUVA PLANINA Those seeking adventure in a wilderness area that’s untainted by human hands will find the right destination in Suva Planina, the dry mountain. All its treas- ures have yet to be fully researched, but it is known for sure that this mountain is home to a third of all plant species in Serbia. This includes a significant num- ber of relict and endemic species. Cel-
