on time and released a digital collec- tion of its designs in Roblox, together with avatar creators Zepeto and Gi- phy. Customers can now dress their avatar and choose what to buy while having a realistic picture of how some- thing really looks on them, in con- trast to classic online shopping. Sev- eral other fashion companies have created similar apps that let you try on outfits online via your avatar. This has built on the success of various multimedia platforms, like Second Life and others, where a realistic feel- ing was already available and which ended up with users buying an item of furniture or clothing. What’s new – and coming at lightning speed thanks to the incredible pace of technolog- ical development – is the complete shift to a virtual world without tan- gible details. And that applies to all segments of life. The whole point of the story is that the metaverse mimics reality by giving you the feeling that you can do everything that you otherwise do in the real world, while you can al- so connect with people on the oth- er side of the world, but not in the way you do on the internet, rather as though the other person is real- ly present even though they’re not. You can play games, shop, hangout with friends. Thus, the metaverse is a three-dimensional space where peo- ple can move around, hangout, work, share property… all via their avatars. What’s fascinating is the growth of interest in digital property own- ership, impressive digital experienc- es and advanced technology. Terms like blockchain, cryptocurrencies and NFT have become commonplace. The metaverse is created on the basis of real-world information, and

seoul is already there Seoul is the world’s first city to officially enter the metaverse. The project is due for comple- tion in 2026, but the Metaverse 120 Center will already be in op- eration by 2023, enabling cit- izens’ avatars to visit and take advantage of certain services.
accessing it requires VR equipment for the use of virtual objects. It is pos- sible to buy items using real money or cryptocurrencies, some of which can already be exchanged for real money. Of course, huge amounts of money are in play, and foreign sites even mention forecasts predicting that around 10 per cent of earnings on luxury goods will come from vir- tual sales by 2030. And here we’re not referring only to games and clothing, but literally to everything – from buy- ing virtual land plots and building houses on them, paying designers to decorate them with NFT furniture (three-dimensional and two-dimen- sional graphic illustrations), offices, buying artworks in virtual form. It is also interesting that there is a need to, for instance, pay huge sums to buy a digital work of art, without actu- ally gaining ownership of the physi- cal original. In layman’s terms, that means that anyone can now buy a Rembrandt, but only one person or museum can actually possess the painting. The metaverse has almost come to life, so asking whether someone would actually spend a seven-digit fig- ure to buy clothes or shoes that can only be worn in the digital sphere is already redundant. The answer is a re-

sounding yes; it’s already happening! We’ve long been living in a world in which physical and digital realities are deeply intertwined. If you recall the TV series Star Trek and its fa- mous ‘holodeck’ relaxation room – where crew members lie down, don special glasses and stroll through for- ested hills or chat with a loved one – well, now you can do the same with the help of VR equipment, primar- ily 3D glasses, spending time with people in a place of your choosing. Everything is possible, from playing tennis at a space station to playing Yahtzee in a park. The metaverse perhaps still seems like fantasy to us, but the children of today will certainly live in a digital and physical world that differs from ours.
