NEKADAŠNJA NARODNA BIBLIOTEKA U srcu Kosančićevog venca ne- kada je bila zgrada Narodne bibliote- ke Srbije koja je 6. aprila 1941. godi- ne, u naletu nemačkih bombardera, srušena do temelja. Bogat književni fond je goreo danima. Nacisti su, ga- đajući zapaljivim bombama, od Na- rodne biblioteke napravili najveće zgarište knjiga. Uništeno je 500.000 svezaka, 1.424 ćirilska rukopisa i povelja od 12. do 17. veka, karto- grafska i grafička zbirka, komplet- ne lične zbirke Vuka Stefanovića Karadžića i Đure Daničića, zbirka turskih dokumenata o Srbiji, celo- kupna prepiska značajnih ličnosti iz kulture i političke istorije Srbije i Jugoslavije. Izgoreli su svi inven- tari i katalozi Narodne biblioteke. Na mestu srušene biblioteke orga- nizuju se književne večeri. KAFANA ZNAK PITANJA Kafana Znak pitanja jedna je od najstarijih kuća u Beogradu i naj- starija beogradska kafana koja i da- nas radi. Enterijer, drveni stolovi, tronošci, i tradicionalni specijalite- ti vraćaju goste u prošla vremena kada je Kosančićev venac bio prvi urbanizovani deo grada. Kafana je tipičan primer gradske kuće balkan- skog tipa s početka 19. veka. Čest posetilac kafane bio je i Vuk Stefa- nović Karadžić, a u njoj se odvijao i kulturni i javni život. Znak pitanja je oduvek bio, i danas je, beograd- sko kultno mesto.

The temple is the burial site of Prince Miloš Obrenović and his son Mihailo Obrenović, as well as cer- tain heads of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Serbian language reformer Vuk Karadžić and Serbian writer and educator Dositej Obradović are both buried in the churchyard in front of the main entrance. FORMER NATIONAL LIBRARY The National Library of Ser- bia once stood at the heart of Ko- sančićev Venac, until it was razed to the ground during a German bomb- ing raid of 6 th April, 1941. Its rich literary fund burned for days. The Nazis targeted the building with in- cendiary bombs, turning the Nation- al Library into the biggest furnace of books. The items destroyed includ- ed 500,000 volumes, 1,424 Cyril- lic manuscripts and charters dating from the 12 th to the 17 th centuries, a cartography and graphics collection, the complete personal collections of Vuk Karadžić and Đura Daničić, a col- lection of Ottoman documents on Serbia and the entire body of cor- respondences of significant figures from the cultural and political his- tory of Serbia and Yugoslavia. All of the National Library’s inventories and catalogues were burned. Liter- ary evenings were organised on the site of the destroyed library.
