RITAM GRADA / RHYTHM OF THE CITY

palace of Serbia’s then ruling Obreno- vić dynasty. However, it was rare for Prince Miloš to reside there and the Residence only realised its prima- ry purpose when it served as a resi- dence during the first reign of his son, Prince Mihailo Obrenović, from 1839 to 1842. It was in 1830 that Princess Ljubica and her children moved to the residence, which represents a fu- sion of European and oriental styles. Its construction marked a turning point in Belgrade architecture, with the inclusion of certain elements in- dicating the influence of European architecture. The residence has pre- served many items from the past, in- cluding items of furniture, paintings, portraits of the principality’s royal family, a heating stove, rugs and an oriental cloakroom, all of which en- able today’s visitors to feel the spir- it of olden times.

three-legged stools, as well as tradi- tional specialities, transports guests back to the bygone time when Ko- sančićev Venac was the first urban- ised part of the city. The tavern rep- resents a typical example of an early 19 th century Balkan townhouse. Vuk Karadžić was among the regular pa- trons of this tavern, which was a place where cultural and public life unfold- ed. The Question Mark has always been, and still remains, a cult Bel- grade venue. PRINCESS LJUBICA’S RESIDENCE Diagonally opposite the Cathe- dral Church stands a gem of Belgrade architecture and civil engineering from the first half of the 19 th century: Princess Ljubica’s Residence, which was constructed with the sole pur- pose of being a representative court
