World Environmental Health Day is commemorated every year in an effort to raise awareness of the detrimental impacts of environmental concerns on human health
ON WORLD ENVIRONMEN TAL HEALTH DAY, WHICH IS THIS year being held under the theme “Our planet, our health”, global attention will be focused on urgent action required to maintain the health of the people and plan- et Earth. First officially held on 26 th Sep- tember 2011, it was launched at the initiative of the Council of the Inter- national Federation of Environmen- tal Health (IFEH) – an organisation that was established in 1986 and is headquartered in London. The aim was, and remains, to disseminate knowledge about the importance of the environment and to promote cooperation between countries to improve the environmental situa- tion around the planet. The IFEH Council declared at its 2011 meeting in Indonesia that
“26 th September 2011 be deemed the foundational World Environ- mental Health Day”. Since then, that date has been earmarked each year with a particular theme focus- ing on an important environmen- tal health issue. Climate change has been de- scribed as the greatest threat to global health in the 21 st century, with high incidences of climate-re- lated health hazards and deaths, as well as the increasing spread of diseases like malaria, dengue fe- ver and heat stress. There is ex- pected to be a rise in the number of people migrating due to the ad- verse impacts of climate change and environmental degradation, with sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia, the Pacific region and South Asia ex- pected to be particularly hard hit if no action is taken.
