Coffee and chocolate map Have a happy sweet perfection In honour of World Chocolate Day (7 th July), we’ve compiled a hedonistic directory of places where this combination of flavours can best be enjoyed

that’s guided by a pragmatic Swiss slogan: “The best coffee is the cof- fee you like”. U.S.A. It appears as though many high-quality bars of this sacred confection can be devoured in New York. Brooklyn’s hipster neighbour- hoods have seen the emergence of Mast Brothers, an artisan chocolate workshop that produces distinctive flavours and has become a tourist attraction in this part of the city on a par with the arty bars of Williams- burg. When it comes to coffee, we suggest you organise a trip to Se- attle. Namely, it was in this city’s Pike Place Market neighbourhood that the first Starbucks emerged, which is why this original location today represents a genuine tour- ist hot spot that’s visited by coffee drinkers from all over the world. Spain The Catalan people are proud that the first chocolate making ma- chine was invented in their sunny city, back in 1780. Yes, it was the Spaniards who brought chocolate from South America to make Bar- celona a famous destination for lovers of good chunks for centu- ries. One must-see attraction is the city’s chocolate museum, Museu de la Xocolata, which will amaze you with its chocolate sculptures and where you can sign up for a class in chocolate painting. Order a cof- fee in the shade of the numerous venues of affordable café-restaurant chain Buenas Migas. Austria Perhaps you first thought of the famous Mozartkugel [Mozart ball], but did you know that the cof- fee drinking culture is so deeply in- grained in the Viennese school of hedonism that UNESCO added the city’s most famous coffee houses to its list of “intangible cultural her- itage” in 2011. When it comes to the domain of chocolate, you won’t be mistaken if you head to the Xo- colat Manufaktur, with its hand- made bars.

Italy There’s always a divine cup of cof- fee around the corner in the Eter- nal City, though only one of them has received the gastronomic mon- iker “Heaven in a Cup”. That’s the one served at the enduring coffee bean roastery known as the Sant’ Eustachio Il Caffe, which has retro décor and a traditionally lazy “dolce far niente” spirit that will leave you feeling like you’ve wandered onto a scene from some black and white Fel- lini flick. Visit the many local delica- tessens in the neighbourhood around the square that this café is named after to find the current biggest hit: Tuscan artisan chocolates from the Vestri, Slitti and Amedei chocolatiers. Switzerland There’s clearly no wrong turn when it comes to choosing a place to find chocolate here, but one place nonetheless lures world chocolate snobs due to the incomparable expe- rience it provides. The municipality of Broc is home to the prestigious Maison Cailler, a popular chocolate factory that reveals its production secrets to visitors during interactive guided tours. It seems like nowadays absolutely everything has its own holiday, which is why, for instance, there’s a a spa- ghetti holiday or World Hugging Day. However, of all these newly introduced days that have been for- mulated to commemorate those lit- tle sweet (and savoury) things that ease life and make it more beautiful, none is closer to our hearts than the one that’s celebrated this month. That’s the holiday of chocolate that’s been commemorated worldwide on 7 th July for quite some time. Belgium The Belgian capital proudly carries the title of “World Capital of Chocolate”. Renowned far and wide for its delicate sweet recipes, Brussels has more chocolatiers per square metre than any other city in the world. Although you’ll find it tempting to spend hours exploring each of them, be sure to set aside enough time in your schedule to visit Choco-Story Brussels, where you’ll be introduced to the complete history of this immensely inspir- ing delicacy. Take a coffee break at Belga & Co, which is guided by its motto “simple pleasures”.
