A High Standard and Unconditional Love

Thinking of My Mom This Mother’s Day

Though our mom was strict when we were kids, she loves harder than anyone we know. We were held to a high standard, but it was out of love. When we got into trouble as kids, just like all kids do, it was then that we saw just how tough she could be. But even when we were in the doghouse, we never doubted that she loved us. Mom is full of unconditional, genuine love, and we would never want to disappoint her. Our parents didn’t attend college, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t value a good education and the doors it can open. They worked very hard and sacrificed a lot so that we could attend the best schools. At home, we were raised to make our own choices and live with the decisions. In the end, we think my mom just wanted us to be good, happy people and hard workers. Luckily, my mom lives very close to me and my sister Ronnie. She stays active and is always there when you need her. Whenever we see her, we share stories with our kids and their kids. More often than not, these interactions happen in the kitchen as we are preparing a delicious and authentic Italian meal. Mom, we love you very much. Thank you for all the life lessons you’ve taught us and for loving each of us unconditionally. We hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day.

This month, we celebrate Mother’s Day, and we get to celebrate the greatest mom in the world. Every day, but especially on this holiday, we are thankful to have been born to a mom who held us to such a high standard while loving us unconditionally. When we were growing up, our parents owned a business together. Our dad worked long hours, and our mom not only stayed at home raising us, but she also worked part-time doing the books for the business. Needless to say, hard work runs in the family. Neither of our parents had the benefit of a college education, but they are some of the smartest and hardest- working people we know. While we were at home with my mom, she definitely believed in child labor and always had us help with the chores around the house. In the summer, we would each get a list of things that needed to be done, and we always finished our lists. She prided herself in keeping a very clean house and delicious food on the table, and we rarely stepped out of line because, well, she was

tough. She inherited her toughness from Grandma Betty, and we could fill a year’s worth of newsletters on that topic. My mom expected us to give our very best in whatever we did. We were to have our homework done as soon as we arrived home from school and before our dad got home from work. She was the one who made sure we behaved ourselves and got good grades, and she was always the one to shuffle us from school to sports, or other activities, and back home. Growing up in New Jersey in the late ‘60s and ‘70s had its benefits. Our dad came from a large Italian family, so Mom learned from Dad’s seven aunts all of their secrets to making incredible food, added it to what she learned from her family, and BAM — she’s the reason that we would rather eat at home than eat out. Over the years, our mom learned to make the best Italian meals you could ever imagine, and she still comes over to our homes to make spaghetti sauce and meatballs.

Personal Injury:

Choosing Your Personal Injury Attorney

The movies tend to be nothing like real life, but that’s only partly true when it comes to the lawyer that you will choose to represent you in your personal injury case. While any lawyer that tells you to limp into court and pretend to be hurt is probably not the best person to hire (you’ll quickly be found out!), it is true that you will be working very closely with the lawyer you hire, which is why it’s vital to find a lawyer that you are comfortable with. ADVICE AND YOUR OWN INTUITION When you hire any kind of expert, it’s important to sit back and listen to what

that person has to say. (This is why you are hiring an expert, after all, right?) At the same time, it’s important that you listen to your own intuition. Here are some of the things to pay attention to when you hire a lawyer: • Do you feel comfortable working with the person you are considering? If the lawyer you are speaking with makes you feel bad about yourself, does not listen to what you have to say, or does not understand you, it might be time to look for someone else. • Do you feel that your lawyer really “gets” what happened to you? Sometimes a personal injury lawyer doesn’t understand the injuries that you’ve sustained or the details of the accident you were in. You need to work with a lawyer who has experience with cases similar to yours. EXPERIENCE MATTERS In some cases, hiring a person without a ton of experience is okay. But when it comes to the lawyer you hire, you’ll want to make sure that person knows the ins and outs of your case. Here are some

questions to ask yourself about your potential lawyer:

• Does your lawyer have extensive experience in personal injury law?

• Has your lawyer worked on any cases that are similar to yours? What was the outcome?

• Does your lawyer have a strong legal team behind him?

• Is your lawyer accessible? Can you reach him with questions that you have, or do you have to go through a number of people to get your questions answered? You and your lawyer must become a solid team. You will work together regularly, which means that you both have to come to a mutual understanding. It’s difficult to work with a lawyer who doesn’t fully comprehend your case, and this is not a road we recommend going down. Make sure that the lawyer you hire is honest and open and has your best interests at heart!

HERE’S WHAT OUR CLIENTS HAVE TO SAY:

“I totally recommend Carmen and the team. Customer service will exceed any of your expectations. Integrity, accountability, and results.”

Memorial Day

Picture this … the weather is sunny and 75, the kids (and Uncle Joe) are doing cannon balls in the pool, the grill is fired up and cooking burgers and hot dogs, and you’re enjoying your favorite

There are a few ways to honor this day without leaving your home. Here are some suggestions:

• Watch an inspiring movie (“The Great Escape,” “Saving Private Ryan,” “Platoon,” “Forrest Gump,” etc.)

• Write an inspiring social media post about the importance of Memorial Day or to show your support for a loved one.

cold beverage while listening to music in the background. We call this a normal Memorial Day weekend here in Southwest Florida, but we often forget its true meaning. For every freedom we have each day, there is a solider in Arlington National Cemetery who gave their life and another overseas right now fighting for us to protect those rights. The freedom to enjoy a day off is often unacknowledged as a day to honor our fallen soldiers and the ultimate sacrifice they made to defend our country. Memorial Day began as “Decoration Day,” which was originally focused toward decorating the graves of fallen soldiers in the Civil War. After World War I, its name was changed to “Memorial Day” to honor all the fallen soldiers in all American wars. Although the dates vary, Memorial Day can now be expected on the last Monday of May.

• Say a quick prayer for the fallen soldiers and their families.

• Donate to the Veterans Association of America.

• Fly your American flag at your home.

Many take this day to relax, and we think that is great. Enjoy your time off, family, and friends. But, if you can, take a moment to think about the ultimate sacrifice that some have given, consider all of the lives that were lost in the line of duty, and take a moment to thank them in your heart for their service to this country! If you believe in the Power of Prayer like I do, say a prayer. May God Bless the United States of America.

Directions 1. Heat grill to high. Season room-temperature steak with salt, pepper, and 1 tablespoon oil. Any oil with a high smoke point, such as canola, will work. 2. Trim bottom inch of asparagus. Season with salt, pepper, and remainder of oil. 3. Cut steak into four portions and grill for 3–5 minutes per side, depending on desired doneness. Skirt steak is thin and will cook quickly. 4. Let steak rest for 10 minutes. While it’s resting, grill asparagus for 6 minutes, turning once. 5. Sprinkle cheese and crushed red pepper on asparagus. Serve alongside steak.
