February 2024 TPT Member Magzine

A NOTE FROM SYLVIA TPT celebrates Black History Month and honors the lasting contributions of Black trailblazers and community members. Our programming features the powerful stories that explore our shared history and a path to a more equitable future. This month, we have a slew of programs that I know you will enjoy – and maybe even share with your friends and family members. With the shift into a New Year, we turn our attention to several new documentary premieres under our Minnesota Experience series. Following the debut of Jesse Ventura Shocks the World! in January (which you can stream for free on the PBS App), we are excited to share the next film in the line-up: Hope in the Struggle , an inspiring look at the life and work of groundbreaking Freedom Fighter, civic leader, and community activist Dr. Josie Johnson, otherwise known as the “First Lady of Minnesota Civil Rights.” Over the course of 70 years, Dr. Johnson fought tirelessly for housing, voting, employment, and education rights in the North Star State, and her story comes to life through her own firsthand account, as well as through the anecdotes of those who know her best – her granddaughters. You will not want to miss this premiere on Monday, February 19 at 8 pm on TPT 2. Earlier in the month, the incomparable Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is back with another riveting series about Black culture in America. A four-hour documentary series, Gospel dives into the history of Black religious music and preaching, showcasing the symbiotic relationship of words and songs present in any Black church. The series also explores the evolution of preaching styles over time, and the impact of class, gender, cultural innovations, and consumer technologies that shaped the development of gospel since its conception. Gospel airs in two parts, February 12 & 13 at 8 pm on TPT 2.
