Good summer weather brings out more and more cyclists on the roads and high- ways in the region. The OPP remind cyc- lists that they have to follow the same rules as car and truck drivers. The Ontario Highway Traffic Act defines a bicycle as a vehicle subject to highway traffic regulations. Infractions can mean specific fines and victim surcharges, which is $20 in most case, and could also result in impounding of a bike. The main traffic rules that cyclists need to remember include: stop for stop signs and red traffic lights and obey all other warning signs and signals. Fine for failure to do so is $85. At a crosswalk any cyclist must yield the right of way to the pedestrian who is al- ready in the crosswalk. Failure means an $85 fine. Also, cyclist using a crosswalk at an intersection must dismount and walk their bike in the crosswalk. Riding a bike in a crosswalk, regardless whether there are also pedestrians in the crosswalk at the time, means an $85 fine. While school is out now, when school is in session, cyclists must obey the rules re- garding school buses which are stopped with lights flashing to either pick up or discharge children. The Russell and District Girls Hockey Association has named their head coaches for top-tiered teams in each competitive division the Castor River Coyotes play in. Midget coach is Dale Drevniok, Bantam is Dale Downey, PeeWee is Todd Marcellus, and Atom is Pascal Hogue. The Coyotes have had a very successful few seasons and already last year the Novice, Atom, Peewee B and Midget were champions in their divisions. The Intermediate BB, Bantam BB, Peewee B and Midget B all played in the provincials. For more information on the girls’ teams see www.eteamz.com/rdgha . The Russell District Girls Hockey Association tryouts for the Castor River Coyotes girls’hockey teams begin the last week of August.
